Wuchang: Fallen Feathershas no shortage of boss fights, seeing how it borrows several notable elements from theSoulsborne games, including gimmick-based areas such as the Cloudspire region where your battle against Ming General takes place.

Like your showdown againstCommander Honglan in the Tang Emperor’s Palace, the bout against Ming General is one that you can’t miss unless you find yourself annoyingly searching for his arena in the frosted landscapes of Cloudspire.

Where To Find Ming General

Prerequisite:You’ll need to lower the central bridge leading into Cloudspire City to fight Ming General, which is done by eitherdefeating the General of the Northor igniting three beacons across three different towers, which are also connected to those cursed tombs with the infinite-repawning enemies.

Once you’ve lowered the bridge into the main city, getting to it can be a bit tricky, with the outskirts of Cloudspire being a slightly convoluted area to navigate. But again, that’s why I’m here to help you out.

From the Rebel Camp Shrine, hop down to where the cannons are and head to the right with the patrolling brute. On this path, you’ll encounter a couple of enemies and an unlockable door to the left, as shown above.Open it and proceed through.

Follow through this area until you see a couple of trash fodder enemies talking with a patrolling enemy nearby.Just past them, it leads to a central area with oil jars in the middle.

The bridge that we lowered in the cutscene after defeating the North General or lighting the three beacons can also be seen in the distance, as I’ve marked above. This is where you can fight Ming General. Just be mindful of the mines placed here and the nearby cannon-firing brute.

From the right path in the image, you can unlock a shortcut, which I strongly recommend doing first before heading straight to the boss fight. It leads back to the unlockable gate with the Cloudspire Outskirts shrine, making it easier to run back to the boss fight.

Best Build For Ming General

Ming General uses two different weapons throughout the entirety of this fight, both of which can be blocked or deflected—for this exact reason, the main weapon of choice that I’ll be going with here is the ‘ol reliable Longsword.

And that is primarily because we’ll be utilizing the Sword Counter skill once again to deflect Ming’s attacks. I’m using the Lashing Whip Longsword here because of its Weapon Skill’s long reach and balanced stat scaling in Strength and Agility.

I STRONGLY advise not having the counterattack node active with the Sword Counter skill.Ming tends to do the grab attack after some sword attacks in his second phase, which always connects if we’re stuck in our counterattack animation.

Although it shouldn’t matter here,my Pendants are mainly defensive-based for this fight, such as the Gourd Pendant and then two stamina ones—Dragon-Fish and Twin Infant Pendant.

Meanwhile, the Benedictionscan be based on your playstyle.Still, there are some generally great ones to have for any build, such as Wei - Combo Force, which increases damage after consecutive attacks, and the increased Stamina Recovery Speed from Ren - Skyborn Vigor.

Lastly, an important item to have equipped to use at all times for this fight is the Sapphire Lotus Seed. You’ll want to pop these whenever possible because Cheng’en will be using frostbite-inflicting attacks in his moveset, which can hinder your stamina capacity.

Ming General Moveset

As is the case with the rest of the Boss fights that we’ve covered for Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, I’ve put together a list of Ming General’s major attacks below so you’re able to practice and learn what works best against them.

Description

Jumping Glaive Stomps

An attack that Ming will always start the fight with when entering the arena. He’ll do three jumping attacks in a row with the glaive, all of which need to be evaded to avoid them. The third one has a slight delay, but if evaded perfectly, you can punish that with a charged backstab to then inflict an Obliterate Strike.

Standard Combo

A standard 3-to-4-hit combo using the glaive, which can be a bit tricky to evade due to the weapon’s long reach, but can be deflected easily.

Thrusting Combo

Another pretty self-explanatory attack where Ming tries to stab you with his glaive in a combo. Again, another easy move to deflect using the Sword Counter skill.

The transition attack for the second phase involves Ming placing his glaive on the ground and then spinning it around to create a massive whirlwind, emerging and slashing at you with a sword. Get away when Ming’s health hits the halfway point threshold to avoid the AOE icicle whirlwind.

Jumping Slash

Ming will pounce at you with a slash, followed by another spinning slash. Perfect Evade the pouncing strike and then deflect the next slashes to interrupt the attack.

Diagonal Spinning Slashes

Ming will diagonally spin his sword at you a few times in quick succession. These can be deflected, but if you’re at a good distance, these can be avoided completely.

Grab Attack

The game will even notify you of this incoming attack with a distinctive sound effect. Ming will dash at you with a spinning kick, and if caught, he will proceed to stun and fatally cut you with his sword. However, this attack is easily evadable due to the telegraphed animation.

Icicle Shards

Similar to the second phase transition attack, Ming readies his sword and summons a group of ice orb clusters around him, which then explode momentarily. Being an AOE attack, you can either time your evasion to perfectly dodge them or just back away when he does this move.

Footstomp Slashes

Ming will stomp the ground with his foot and then proceed to follow that up with a flurry of spinning slashes, which can quickly inflict frostbite.

Jumping Sword Slash

Much like the jumping glaive attack, Ming will leap into the air to strike at you with his sword, but instead of doing it three times, he’ll follow the first one with an upwards sweep to the ground.

How To Beat Ming General

First Phase

With the major moves out of the way, it’s time for a strategy to take him down. Be sure to activate your temperance before heading into the fight. I’m using thedefault Bone Needlethat buffs your weapon with fire damage buildup to help increase the damage.

As soon as the fight begins, get ready to evade those three jumping attacks and then, preferably, hit the charged backstab after he lands the third one.Depending on how much you’re leveled for this fight, you’ll either rush this first phase quickly via this Obliterate Strike, like I did, or just get a quarter of his HP down.

Ming can be an aggressive boss in both of his phases; play it safe, just like the fight against Honglan. If you manage to perfectly deflect his spear attacks, you won’t even have to worry about the rest, since the entire incoming move can get interrupted on successful counters.

Get a couple of hits in and always stay at a fair distance so you may have an easier time predicting his moves and their animation. To reiterate, the better you are at parrying and getting hits in, the faster you’ll triumph over this phase and move on to the next one.

Why just play a Souls game when you could play a soulslike with a little something extra?

Second Phase

The second phase begins when the Ming General does his whirlwind attack, jumping at you with his sword from within it.The rule of thumb here is to watch out for those quick-paced roundabout slashes that can decimate your HP and inflict frostbite.

attempt to get some distance if that happens, and quickly heal up if you need to, or eat a Sapphire Lotus Seed to cure that frostbite.I wouldn’t recommend tanking it because the status ailment halves your stamina, which, let’s be honest, is just non-ideal for this fight.

Midway through the second phase, if you’ve got the skill that provides you with two Temperance charges, make sure to activate it to buff up your weapon damage again.

The strategy is relatively the same; there’s not much else I can recommend here, because the majority of this fight is how skill-dependent you are with your evasions and deflects.Due to the arena and moveset tendency, I also wouldn’t recommend using any spells here.

The grab attack is so brutal on a base game playthrough that it can outright one-shot kill you on NG+. Heed my warning on deactivating the counterattack node again, because I died a couple of times just because of Wuchang being locked in her counterattack animation, and with Ming doing his grab attack amidst it.

For defeating Ming General, in addition to receiving a heap ton of Mercury and the trophy/achievement for beating him, you’ll earn the following rewards.Oh, and of course, you’ll also now be able to enter Cloudspire City and get to fightMistress of the Nightlater on as one of the next set of bosses.
