8 Best Soulslikes Where Grinding is Fun

Ah grinding…the escapist passion of a soulslike player.

After beatingSouth General Liu WenxiuandNorth General Ai Nengqi, you might be wondering where the East and West Generals are, who seem to be the two NPCs you encounter on your way to Cloudspire.

Eventually, you do get to fight Li Dingo, who is a rathertough optional bosswho’s not afraid to face you head-on in an epic duel.

Where To Find Li Dingo

Li Dingo can be encountered throughout your playthrough as an NPC at first, past Hillswatch and on your way to Cloudspire.

You’ll see him again in Zhenwu Temple, and if you give him the Secret Missive key item from an NPC in Cloudspire Outskirts, the ensuing duel can be bypassed entirely.

Regardless of whether you plan to fight him,Li Dingo’s final location is near the Ferry Overlook shrine, just past the Boatman, and at the end of the ravine.

To reach the Ferry Overlook, you’ll need to beat the two-phased boss fight against theFierce Tiger and the Sovereign, which unlocks the Zhenwu Altar shrine.

From that shrine, follow the path downward through a dilapidated house. If you’ve just beaten the Fierce Tiger, you’ll also run into the Storyteller, who will tell you that you’re going the wrong way, and offers to teleport you to Hillswatch.Ignore him for now and continue your way downward.

To your left is a bamboo forest where you can purchase items from the panda.Go straight into the cavern and explore a little.

In the cavern, you’ll then come across a split path. Go straight to where some enemies are fighting each other. The other path leads to a dead end, but you can acquire the Heavenly Thunder spell by beating an elite rebel soldier.

After you’ve activated the shrine, continue downwards. You’ll find the Boatman, who may lend his boat to you to reach the Bai Mansion, which will lead you to theBai Kru boss fight. But for this guide, walk past him and continue along the shore to the right.

As you approach the ravine, you’ll see monster corpses strewn about and a Li Dingo standing at the end with a waterfall as a background. He’ll attack once you reach a certain distance. This boss also does not have a mist wall.

Li Dingo is a straightforward boss with no gimmicks and no known elemental affinities, and does not cause anystatus effectbuildups, so there’s no need for any special status effect resistances.

Since you’re dueling a swordsman,it’s best to equip armor that has decent Slash and Stab damage mitigation.

10 Best Survival Games With Soulslike Elements

Survival games can be tough, but these best survival games test even the most experienced survivalist with their Soulslike elements.

While I wore the Sovereign’s outfit after mybattle with the Fierce Tiger,I would recommend using an armor set with better stats, most notably the Centipede armor set, which you can earn from defeating theBlightweaver bossin Mercury Workshop.

If, for some reason, you don’t have the Centipede armor set, then you can use the Ming armor set, which can be acquired by defeating a Ming soldier as a world drop.

ForTemperance, any Stone needles that give you a Strength or Agility boost are welcome. Since Li Dingo has no known elemental resistances, you may use any elemental Bone needle to supplement your damage.

In my playthrough, I used a Flame Stone Needle, but Leeching could be useful here, since it heals you with each attack.

BenedictionsandJade Pendantsthat help maximize your stamina gains and damage output would be helpful for this fight, as you’ll be constantly moving and attacking while avoiding his attacks. Pendants likeTiger, Twin Infant, and Eagleare helpful for this fight.

Whilea magic build is ridiculously strongand is perfectly valid against a melee enemy, many of the spells have a slow casting and recovery time, leaving you vulnerable to attacks.

During my fight, the only spell I used wasEthereal Form, which isone of the game’s most overpowered spells. With a cost of only oneSkyborn Mightstack, activating this spell automatically makes you dodge any attack for three seconds, all the while refunding a Skyborn Might stack for each attack dodged.

Ethereal Form can be found in Zhenwu Temple,on a corpse near two cannons on the left side of the temple, with Zhenwu Antechamber as the closest shrine.

Much like the fight againstCommander HonglanandSouth General Liu Wenxiu, you’ll be dueling with another swordsman, so I would recommend a longsword build, whichI have covered extensively here.

As a brief summary, the idea of this build is whittling an enemy down with a simple one-two combo before casting the OP Ethereal Form spell to avoid just about any attack coming your way.

With Sword Counter, Sword Saint, and Windforce as the main upgrade perks of your build, you’ll be able to consistently have at least one Skyborn Might stack at your disposal as long as you remain aggressive and land your second hit.

Sword Counter willallow you to parryjust about any physical attacks made by weapons. Not only that, but the parry window is incredibly generous.

Make sure toprioritize speccing points into the longsword skill tree to reach the “Sword Counter” node and Variant 1 and Variant 2before dumping the remaining points into maxing out your Agility and Weapon Mastery.

Endurance and Vitality are also useful points to spec into, as well as “Steel Resolve,” which gives you a stack of Skyborn Might on a successful parry when you have 50% or more Madness.

I used the Lashing Whip as my weapon of choice, with the express reason of it being the best weapon that scales with Agility.

While this build is more focused on swordplay, support spells like Divine Might and Divine Ward can ensure that you’re able to hit hard as well as survive Li Dingo’s onslaught.

Li Dingo Moveset And How To Beat Him

Li Dingo is no slouch. While he might not have complicated movesets like the Bo Sorcerer or devastating grab attacks like the Ming General, or even a giant boss health bar like everybody else, he still hits just as hard and can take as much punishment asany boss enemy.

To best compare this boss fight with your other encounters,Li Dingo has similar behaviors and movesets as summoned allied NPCs and Inner Demons,as they have limited yet effective attack combos and can heal themselves a few times with a flask.

As far as I’ve counted,Li Dingo can heal himself twice or more, and will often heal himself when his health bar is at half or less. Keep this in mind when you’re fighting him.

When you approach Li Dingo, he’ll start by tempering his weapon with dark, magical energy.

When his sword is glowing, he can execute some powerful, energy-based attacks, including a sword swipe that damages everything around him in a wide circle, and firing magical blades with each swipe from his sword.

Neither of these attacks can be parried, so dodging is the only way to avoid getting hit.

For the rest of his attacks,Li Dingo has simple, well-telegraphed sword combos, complete with sword thrusts and jump attacks, which can all be parried.

However, beware that if you do parry him, he can dodge your counter and execute another counterattack, which can complicate the fight.

Unlike other fights against humans, countering might be to your detriment, so the best strategy is to quickly cast Ethereal Form to automatically dodge any of his attacks and attack him in between his combos, and try to get a heavy attack from behind him for an easy Oblierate attack.

Whether you beat Li Dingo or give him the Secret Letter, you’ll receive the following rewards:
