It’s hard to overstate the impact ofNo Country for Old Men, and in turn, Javier Bardem’s Oscar-winning performance as the deranged killer Anton Chigurh, arguably one of the most intimidating figures ever to be put onscreen. But while theDunestar’s character in the Coen brothers’ western thriller was devoid of a conscience, remorse, and compassion, similar wasn’t the case for Bardem during his stint in the film.

Josh Brolin, who starred opposite theSkyfallstar, recounted his costar’s depressive state of mind on set, as the actor wasn’t exactly comfortable with playing a deranged psychopathic killer.
Josh Brolin Took a Depressed Javier Bardem Out for a Drink DuringNo Country for Old Men
While Anton was an embodiment of pure evil, in real life, Javier Bardem couldn’t be more different from one of his most iconic gigs to date, as Brolin deemed (viaJRE) his costar one of“the sweetest human beings”. Following the heavy contrast between Anton and Bardem, theInfinity Warstar detailed that the Oscar winner was really“depressed”, adding that he didn’t enjoy playing thepsychopathic Anton, and was certainly not a fan of his hair.

In order to unwind the actor from the stress of playing Anton, as Bardem barely left his apartment during that period,Josh BrolinandWoody Harrelsontook theDunestar to a Cowgirl cafe to“have drinks with him”.
Yeah. Me and Woody would take him out to the Cowgirl Café and we would have drinks with him because he would stay in his apartment with the drapes drawn and all this kind of s—t. He just didn’t want to go out. He said, ‘I don’t like violence. I don’t drive. I don’t know why they hired me. Why the f—k did they hire me? Why am I here?’

Although the Marvel star initially didn’t recognize the potential of the Coen brothers’ production due to the“simplicity of the film’s plot”, after witnessing it on the big screen with his son, Brolin’s stance changed.
Javier Bardem Was Insecure About His Performance inNo Country for Old Men
Despite delivering one of the most menacing performances ever to be put on the silver screen,Javier Bardemonce confessed to being insecure about himself during the production of the Western thriller. TheDunestar’s insecurities stemmed from the talent that surrounded him, as during the iconic coin flip sequence, Bardem was doubtful of his performance (viaVanity Fair).
The scary part of that scene is not so much my character but the actor [playing opposite Bardem] really recreates fear in an amazing way. It was a couple of takes – boom, done. I was like, What? Really? After months of preparing this is it? I was so insecure and uh, but, they are the Cohens and they know what they’re doing.
