WhenHogwarts Legacy, the open-world RPG set in the beloved Wizarding World, launched in February 2023, it quickly became apparent that this was no ordinary game. Sure, the immersive gameplay and stunning visuals were impressive, but it was a particular feature that truly set Hogwarts Legacy apart as a shining example of inclusivity, going directly against the views of the series’ creator, J.K. Rowling.
As is now fairly common knowledge, Rowling has faced serious criticism for her views on transgender rights, which have been deemed transphobic by many. Her comments have led to a backlash from fans and activists alike, who argue that her views are harmful to the transgender community.
The Character Creator: A Tool for Self-Expression
The feature in question is none other thanHogwarts Legacy‘s character creator. When you start the game, you’re given the freedom to create your own unique witch or wizard, with a wide range of customization options that allow for a genuinely broad spectrum of characters.

In an interview withGameHub, Stephen Dona, a technical game designer onHogwarts Legacy, spoke about the importance of inclusivity in the game’s character creator:
Whatever way you see yourself, that should be acceptable. That’s the way we approached it. We wanted to verify that whatever we put in there, it was done in a very respectful way. And it’s not just for show, it’s not just to tick a box. It’s something that we believe in.
This sentiment is in stark contrast toRowling‘s position on transgender rights. While the author has since stated(in an attempt at damage control?)that she supports the transgender community, her actions and comments have been seen by many as contradictory to this claim.
Creating a Wizarding World for Everyone
But the game’s approach to inclusivity doesn’t stop at the character creator.Hogwarts Legacyalso features a transgender character named Sirona Ryan, who works as a bartender at the Three Broomsticks in Hogsmeade. While Sirona’s role in the game is relatively minor, her inclusion is still significant, as it marks one of the first times a transgender character has been featured in a major AAA video game.

Hogwarts Legacy‘s character creator may seem like a small step in the right direction, but it’s an important one nonetheless. By allowing players to create characters that represent them, the game sends a powerful message: that everyone, no matter who they are or how they identify, is welcome in the wizarding world.
