So, what exactly are the Wraiths of Morhogg in The Witcher and are they the same as The Wild Hunt?
If you are anything like me, you have probably already binge-watched the entirety ofThe WitcherSeason 2. Packed with chaos and surprises, season 2 most certainly offers more meat on the bones for fans of the books and games.
While the Wild Hunt is a central part ofThe Witcheruniverse, it was only towards the end of season 2 did viewers get to witness the ominous force and get a real taste of what Ciri will be up against as the show moves into its third season.
At the end of episode eight titled ‘Family’, Ciri, Yennefer and Geralt briefly come face to face with the Wraiths of Morhogg as they rose from the dusty horizon. In the nick of time, Ciri managed to teleport them out of harm’s way and then asked Geralt “Were those the Wraiths of Morhogg?”.
What Are the Wraiths of Mörhogg and are they the same as The Wild Hunt?
The Wild Hunt, or otherwise known as the Wraiths of Mörhogg by the townsfolk in Skellige, are indeed the same entity. Ominous by nature, the Wraiths of Mörhogg are seen racing on horses through the skies as an omen to an upcoming war and to also kidnap humans.
The group of Aen Elle elves, meaning elves who inhabit another world, are from Tir ná Lia and are governed by their leader Eredin Bréacc Glas, otherwise known as the fearful King of the Wild Hunt. Now we see the group of Dearg Ruadhri (red riders) have set their sights on the princess of Cintra, Ciri, for her sought-after Elder Blood.
Interestingly, The Wild Hunt wasn’t just created forThe Witcherbooks. The Norse folklore behind the undead riders dates back centuries. In Scandinavia, it was called Oskoreia, “Terrifying Ride,” or Odensjakt, “Odin’s Hunt.” In Middle High German, it was called Wuotanes Her, “Odin’s Army,” and in modern German Wütende Heer, “Furious/Inspired Army,” or Wilde Jagd, “Wild Hunt.”.
