Shimotsuki Yasuie is one of the most memorable characters fromOne Piece‘s Wano Arc. He served as the Daimyo of Hakumai during the rule of the Kozuki family. But after Kurozumi Orochi took over Wano, Yasuie sacrificed himself in order to mislead the shogun’s forces. He was killed by Orochi and his forces, and all the while he was smiling.

For a long time, fans thought that Yasuie constantly smiled because he had consumed the SMILE fruit. In theOne Pieceanime, Toei animated a scene in which Yasuie took Toko’s fruit and ate it on-screen. However, this was a completely original addition, as the scene never existed in the manga. In the flashback of chapter 1050, Yasuie discovers Toko ate the SMILE fruit and claimed that he, too, would take a bite out of it. However, the chapter doesn’t show him actually eating the fruit.
Yasuie’sVivre Cardfurther proves this fact because he is not stated to be a SMILE user. This implies that he never actually ate the SMILE fruit, which matches chapter 1050. But episode 1077 ofOne Pieceanime has thrown off fans with the addition of the fruit-eating scene.
Why did Yasuie Always Laugh Despite Not Having Eaten the SMILE Fruit?
Toko ate the SMILEFruitout of hunger, which Yasuie discovered soon. He thus promised his adoptive daughter he would eat it, too. Thus to make her feel at ease, he, too, began to maintain a constant smile on his face, proving his love. By that time, the country of Wano was also filled with people who had eaten the same fruit and had to laugh even in despair. Maybe Yasuie laughed just to make everyone around him feel at ease.

The Vivre Card further states that Yasuie encouraged the victims of SMILE with a big smile on his own face. Thus, even at times when he could not afford to be jolly, Yasuie laughed simply to assure his people. Even at the time of his death, his smile didn’t falter for a single moment.This makes the scene of his death a hundred times worse than it already is.
The only difference is that while the smiles of everyone else were artificially caused by the SMILE Fruit, Yasuie smiled by himself, making it natural. But he had the willpower to smile through his imminent death and even when he was shot continuously. While Yasuie’s dedication to his country and its people was already clear, this extra piece of information adds a whole new depth to his character.
