Disney has been on a roll of remaking their older classics. Be itCinderella,Beauty and The Beast,The Little Mermaid,Rapunzel,The Jungle Book, or most famouslyThe Lion King. With multiple prequels, sequels, live-action, and different animated versions,The Lion Kinghas become one of Disney’s most profitable franchises.

So, it is no wonder that they keep reprising the same content over and over. However, for many, multiple variations of the same story time and again has completely dissolved whatever charm the movie held initially.

However, there is one Disney movie that touched the hearts of fans across the globe yet somehow managed to skip this trend for the most part. That is,Big Hero 6, and the fans couldn’t be happier about it.

Disney’sLion Kingfranchise got ruined because of the studio’s harmful trend

It would be unfair to call out Disney for their remaking tendencies, when it seems like the entire Hollywood suffers from it. Some of said remakes do end up being good. However, the majority of them suffer from cliches, and come off as an imitation of their older, iconic counterparts at best.

While there is nothing wrong with reinterpreting classics through a new lens, too much in too little time can ruin the movie for good. This has been true for Disney, especially withtheirLion Kingfranchise. While the iconic 1994 animatedTheLion Kingmovie had its own sequel four years later, trouble started brewing when the company’s master plan manifested itself in the 2019 live-action movie.

Jon Favreau’s adaptation received mixed reviews and a 51%Rotten Tomatoesscore. However, the franchise returned in 2024 withMufasa‘s story inMufasa: The Lion King.Barry Jenkinsdirected the prequel which has managed to gain a 56% score onRotten Tomatoes.

Unfortunately, though, after so many adaptations, a lot of people have lost their interest in the movie entirely. Interestingly, there arereports of yet another adaptation comingto the screens. There is, however, one Disney masterpiece that has managed to skip this trend of sequels, prequels, and remakes, and fans are all for it.

Baymax in Big Hero 6

Disney’sBig Hero 6still touches hearts of fans without hopping on the trend of remakes

Disney’s masterpieceBig Hero 6has somehow managed to escape from the studio’s remake obsession. The movie is based around the journey of Hiro Hamada, a 14-year-old tech prodigy determined to avenge the death of his brother Tadashi Hamada, with the help of the robot Baymax.

The film won the Academy Award in the Best Animated Feature Film category in 2015. One would think that winning an Oscar would mean that the studio would try their hardest to exploit the story for more gain, as they have done so with other movies.

10 Animated Movies That Deserved a Sequel But Never Got One

Interestingly, although the movie inspired two animated series, multiple video games, as well as a manga, it has magically avoided any drastic remakes the studio might have tried to explore. The reason behind that might actually be the decision of the movie’s original makers.

10 Animated Movies That Deserved a Sequel But Never Got One

Roy Conli,Big Hero 6’s producer, recently appeared in an interview withScreen Rantand stated the same. According to him, while there are no such plans for a sequel of this iconic movie yet, he tries to urge director Don Hall from time to time to think about it.

It’s interesting because it is really up to Don whether he wants to make a sequel to that. It was Don’s concept and idea. I always secretly urge him to do it, but we’ll see. He loves working on new property. So we’ll see what happens.

Big Hero 6is celebrating the 10-year anniversary of its release this year. While people are grateful that Disney has not ruined the masterpiece with their obsession with remakes, many wouldn’t mind a sequel now either.

As Conli has expressed his enthusiasm for the same, it would be interesting to see if it ever comes to fruition. Although only time will tell whether that movie would be able to hold on to its brilliance, fans seem hopeful about it anyway.
