Among the many criticisms that were hauled atA Minecraft Movie, was the fact that the film had decided to take the live-action route, rather than using animation to tell its story. This has worked out well for most video game properties, be itArcane,Castlevania, orThe Super Mario Bros. Movie.

While films likeThe Super Mario Bros. Moviehave managed to make big money with animation,Sonic The Hedgehoghas received widespread success in the live-action space. The studio wanted to explore a new dimension for A Minecraft Movie
Olafsson, who is a part of Mojang Studios, talked about how there was surveying of the fan backlash that came with the first trailer of the film, with an explicit focus on the criticisms that were levied at the choice of the medium. He said (viaIGN):
We made animated content before, and there’s a lot of it out there. But that was also one of the reasons why the filmmakers wanted to go with live action rather than animate it, rather than do something that’s been done before.

The idea was thatMinecrafthas already seen a lot of animated content, with an overabundance of it on the internet. The film specifically will explore how the the game could translate to live action, presenting a very popular world in a bold new medium that could cater to audiences’ expectations, while subverting it as well.
