The Marvel Cinematic Universe has run its course as far as the majority of the fans are concerned. Kevin Feige’s dream world that first came into existence with Robert Downey Jr.’sIron Manin 2008 now falls into ruins with Brie Larson’sThe Marvelsin 2023. The film only reaffirmed the belief that Marvel’s obsession with easy sequels instead of original ideas is leading to its downfall.

With its somewhat off-putting, childish, and brittle script that lacked all of the charm and maturity of the firstCaptain Marvelfeature, audiences were understandably annoyed when a recent news update fromThe Marvelsproducer hinted at the possibility of a sequel.

The MarvelsFails to Spark Awe and Wonder

AfterBrie Larson‘s incredible MCU debut withCaptain Marvelin 2019, fans were shown a peek into the bright future that lay ahead by establishing the origin of one of the best IPs of the franchise. Not only did the MCU then fail to use Larson’s superhero in their greatestAvengersfilm but insulted the very intelligence of the audience with her6-minute screentimeinEndgame.

2023 proved to be the last straw for the MCU fans. The Marvelscatalyzed the pre-existing condition of Superhero fatigue by leaning into the “fun Disney musical” theme instead of showing it for its true self – a poor attempt on Marvel’s part to cash in on an intergalactic superhero team-up adventure without any actual build-up to its central premise of the Kree-Skrull war.

The film’s central premise which roots itself in Dar-Benn’s vengeance also failed to leave an impact on the audience. The MCU could have simply added another Captain Marvel film between the 2019 origin and its 2023 sequel to elaborate on the lore-heavy Kree-Skrull war and the extent of Carol Danvers’s involvement in it through the decades.

Armor Wars Reportedly Changing Its Title, Focusing on Kree-Skrull War Rather Than Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man Tech

To make matters further confusing,The Marvelsclaimed the authority of being the first official movie to introduce the Foxverse X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But the MCU sequel failed to take charge of its own plot before piggybacking an entire saga of another reality.

Fans Are Repelled By the Thought ofThe MarvelsSequel

The Marvelsinflated itself with too much self-indulgence while crafting its superhero narrative. Gone are the days of an authentic MCU delight built in the veins of Iron Man and Captain America. Those early Phase movies knew how to introduce a character and then flesh them out over a 3-movie solo arc before launching them as a self-sacrificial god.

As such, there was no emotional reaction toTeyonah Parris‘s contribution to closing the space rift in the film’s third act, or to Carol Danvers’s fight for the Skrull’s rights, or the destruction of Tarnax. The team-up in itself felt too weak in its conception, let alone launching the entire Khan family into space withSamuel L. Jackson‘s Nick Fury to earn some easy laughs and comedic respite in the film.

Moreover,The Marvelsfailed to stick to its Kree-Skrull politics, and the plot was spread all over the place (re: Prince Yan and his aquatic planet that communicates through song). The thought of having to sit through another such film in the near future is enough to leave the fans distraught. The Marvelsproducer, however, was of another opinion.

When asked about the film’s X-Men post-credits and if there would be any follow-up to what was on the other side of that space rift, Mary Livanos who worked onThe Marvelsclaimed,“I think fans and myself will have to tune in to find out”[viaComicBook]. But the fans in question are of another opinion entirely.

So no eternals but they are about to make another garbage sequel

There won’t be one. Just random shit to get people into the theater (and it didn’t work)

I don’t think they know

To reiterate that the idea of a sequel toThe Marvelsis a poor one would be an understatement. Kevin Feige promptly needs to replace his baseball hat and put on his thinking cap before his franchise further degrades into a mess of its own making.
