Game of Throneshas always been a franchise that focuses on multiple stories at once and does not spoon-feed information to its audience. Leaving certain parts of the story open to interpretation, there have been many beautiful and tragic stories that the entire fandom agrees on. However, when so much is left open-ended, audiences are left astray and move too far away from the truth.

Be it the books or the series, fan theories are inevitable, and one has been following the series for years. Although Hodor’s presence has been well-known, his past is still murky for both book readers and those who have watched the series. There has been more than enough proof that suggests that he is related to Ser Duncan. However, it has yet to be confirmed.
“It was a very turbulent relationship”: Two Game of Thrones Actors Were Actually Exes, Allegedly Had So Much Bad Blood They Refused to Do Scenes Together
It was recently announced that a prequel series calledA Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knightwill be released. With the series following the story of Duncan, it may be a possibility that fans get an answer to this age-old question.
Hodor and His Connection to Old Nan in theGame of ThronesSeries
George R. R. Martin’sA Song of Ice and Fire, also known as theGame of Thronesseries, establishes a connection between Hodor and Old Nan, a character who is regarded as one of the oldest to reside in Winterfell. His ominous past opens up a lot of possibilities about what and who his lineage could lead to. His connection to Bran is one that also ties him to an unusual fate.
Before he was known by the famous name, Hodor was better known as Wylis. The only known family member of Wylis was said to be Old Nan, who was established as his great-grandmother. His parents, or even grandparents, for that matter, were yet to be revealed. However, another key point to be noted here is that Old Nan’s two daughters are estranged from her.

Hodor’s Mysterious Past and Ser Duncan
Ser Duncan the Tall looks uncannily similar to Hodor. Not just with his astonishing height but also with their physical features, both of them share similar traits. The theory that could connect the two may go far beyond just physical features. It all depends on Ser Duncan’s possible relationship with Old Nan. Although the character has yet to be introduced, there is more than a strong possibility he may be the great-grandfather of Hodor.
Bran’s vision of a person looking almost like Hodor kissing another mysterious woman inA Dance with Dragonscould be the image of Ser Duncan and Old Nan together during their younger days. The very theory of the two of them turning out to be lovers could connect Ser Duncan with Hodor. While this is just an unconfirmed theory, the chance of it becoming canon is becoming more than likely.

The books have not established such a relationship yet. However, it is more than likely that they will lead in such a direction. If theGame of Thronesprequel series comes out before George R. R. Martin reveals the twist in the books, it would be quite something.
However, if it does not get confirmed in the book series, it is not unheard of for the franchise to go off-script or away from the source material. To create a satisfying viewing experience for their viewers, show creators and executives take some very extreme measures. Perhaps even spoiling a potentially big plot for book readers.
