Supermassive Games, who many will know as the developers of titles such as Until Dawn, The Quarry, and The Dark Pictures Anthology, have been acquired by Nordisk Games.
The news comes after Nordisk Games previously took a 30.7% stake in Supermassive back in 2021, but have now gone on to acquire 100% of the company, making them the new owners of the UK-based studio. Originally founded in 2008, Supermassive has gone on to create numerous critically acclaimed interactive horror titles, with their most recent release being The Quarry, which launched for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC in June of this year.
The news was confirmed via astatement from Supermassive Games, who said that they “have an exciting and ambitious growth strategy for Supermassive Games” and that their acquisition by Nordisk Games will only enhance that vision.
Whilst Mikkel Weider, the CEO of Nordisk Games, expressed that it has been “clear” to them whilst working with Supermassive the they have talent and potential to further develop the kinds of story and narrative-driven games which the developers excel at.
Nordisk Games are a sub-division of Nordisk Film, a company based in Copenhagen that makes equity investments in European game studios. Their current portfolio includes the likes of Avalanche Studios Group, Star Stable Entertainment, Nitro Games, Flashbulb Games, MercurySteam, Supermassive Games and Kogama.com.
The biggest development team in Nordisk Games' portfolio is Avalanche Studios, who are the developers of titles such as Just Cause, Mad Max, Rage 2, theHunter, and more.
Supermassive Games is another huge acquisition for the company, and will reportedly enhance the relationship between the two companies. The statement was closed with Mikkel Weider saying “In acquiring 100% of the studio weâll be able to increase our support to the team, and most importantly, continue the great working relationship we have with them”.
