Sony’s successfulSpider-Man Universehas officially ended withKraven the Hunter. Although the SSU project was initially planned after the Andrew Garfield starringThe Amazing Spider-Man 2’s release, it was shelved after the movie’s disappointing performance. It was relaunched, however, when in 2015, Sony struck a deal with Marvel to collaborate with the studio on future appearances of the web-slinger, and eventually integrate the character into the expansive MCU.

Sony’s plan was to give the villains from the comics, as well as some other characters who have gotten lost in obscurity because of their lack of media representation in movie adaptations a center stage to shine.

This produced the heavily appreciatedVenomseries,Morbius,Madame Web, andKraven the Hunter. However, what is interesting is that even with 5 movies in their bag, Sony’sSpider-Man Universemade less than Marvel did in just one movie.

Sony’sSpider-Man Universeended withKraven the Hunter

Sony’sSpider-Man Universestarted with the release ofVenomin 2018. With a whopping $856 million box office collection according toBox Office Mojo, the film was a massive success. It was followed byVenom: Let There Be Carnagein 2021, whereTom Hardycame back to reprise his character as Eddie Brock, aka, Venom’s host. The saga finally ended with the release ofKraven the Hunter, on December 13th, 2024. Although it remains to be seen how theAaron Taylor-Johnsonstarrer fares at the box office, the initial projections are nothing to write home about. However, there have been movies that went on to become massive successes breaking all earlier projections before, so the jury is still out on that one.

Marvel made more with one movie than Sony did in 5Spider-Man Universemovies

Sony’s total collection from the 5 Spider-Man Universemovies stand at around $2.10 billion. That is a lot unless you compare it with one Marvel movie that has beaten the entire franchise and then some. One of the most successful movies to date,Avengers: Endgame, earned a total of $2.7 billion according toCollider. What is even more interesting is it featured the MCU’s version ofSpider-Man, played byTom Holland.

Filled with emotions, action, and some of the most epic moments from theMCU, the movie was a fitting climax to the story that has been unfolding since theAvengerssaga began. A VFX masterpiece, the movie managed to conduct the most insane crossovers so smoothly that it will stay with the audience for a long time.

It also markedRobert Downey Jr.’s stint in the MCU as Iron-Man through possibly a most fitting goodbye to the enigmatic character with a heroic death. Although the MCU will continue on with various upcoming projects, that movie marked the end of an era. Now it will be interesting to see whetherKraven the Huntercomes anywhere close to that glory, or the SonySpider-Man Universefizzles out in obscurity with disappointment.
