In the interview, Howard was asked about why he decided to make the series universe part of the games, stepping away from Marvel, which makes its own universe far from the comics. He said,
Well, it definitely is harder to do, right? We just felt, as fans of Fallout, that would be the kind of show we’d want to watch and the things where we think the world of Fallout is going in the future.

The goal was to make fans part of the experience.

The TV show takes place many years after the events of the game’s fourth installment. The goal is to highlight the important things that happen in the title part of the series. With future games in development, like the already-confirmed fifth game that will eventually come, the writers will have to be very careful about how they merge these two scenarios and make them look good and organic.
