The first trailer ofThunderbolts*has managed to win back a lot of fans, almost bringing back the atmosphere that was present at the beginning of Phase 3 of the MCU. Of the many easter eggs that came with the teaser, fans are obsessed with one that has seemingly nothing to do with the narrative of the film, or so fans thought.

Scarlett Johansson, who played Natasha Romanoff for 10 years in the MCU, has been credited as an executive producer on the film, with there being no signs of her in the narrative. This could be because the actress might have some terms in her contract that cause her to be part of products that feature characters introduced inBlack Widow, but there is a possibility that Johansson might just be part of the film’s cast as well.
Scarlett Johansson could be playing Natasha Romanoff again…sort of.
Natasha Romanoff died sacrificing herself on Voromir so that Clint Barton could receive the Soul Stone. Since then, Yelena seems to have operated as the Widow of choice for the MCU. However, there was a short-lived time in the comics when there was a clone of Natasha Romanoff who was used to commit some crimes.
This would be reason enough for the likes of Alexie and Yelena to get involved. The Thunderbolts could very well be assembled to take down Widow, who could have made some powerful friends, needing an entire team of supersoldiers rather than just a few operatives.

Thunderbolts* Puts Sebastian Stan’s Anti-Hero in a Tough Spot as Fans Come Up With Wild Theories about the Winter Soldier’s Shabby New Look
However, there are a slew of other waysScarlett Johanssoncould operate as Natasha Romanoff in the MCU. There are a lot of loose ends from a slew of projects that could tie into the Thunderbolts*.
One such project isSecret Invasion, which essentially put a very strong spy-cum-black ops operative in the hands of the British government, in the form of Talos’ daughter G’iah. Given that the character has been given a slew of powers that were extracted during the Harvest, the US government might be looking to level the playing field.

G’iah could have used Natasha’s face once or twice, drawing the ire of Yelena and her family. This could also explain why a character as powerful as The Sentry needs to be on a government payroll team. However, if there is a clone in the MCU, this would open up a whole new can of worms for our heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The reveal that Natasha is a clone could come in a fight with Bucky
The Winter Soldier has fought Black Widow before and has managed to beat her too. If there is indeed a false Black Widow with the face of Natasha Romanoff running around in the MCU, a way to reveal this ruse would be to have the character face off against Bucky Barnes, who will be able to discern if the character is indeed the real Natasha, or simply someone wearing her face.

Scarlett Johansson could also appear in a flashback sequence, given that Yelena and Alexie will appear in this film, and it is also rumored that Rachel Weisz will reprise her role as Melina Vostokoff fromBlack Widow.
Further, there are also a few rumors that Harrison Ford, after his introduction as Red Hulk inCaptain America: Brave New World, will join the team. Given all these variables, it seems like Marvel has the opportunity to craft a well-connected section of its franchise. Johansson could simply be producing, with no part in the film, but it would seem like a waste if she wasn’t in the film at all.

Thunderbolts*is set to release on June 12, 2025
