Brought up to have a deep connection with her faith, Angela Kinsey played a very similar character to herself in the American mockumentary sitcom The Office. Donning the role of the strict and religious Angela Martin from the accounting department of Dunder Mifflin Paper Company, Kinsey recalled how she felt like one joke had gone too far, regarding her character.

Although her character often clashed with others in regards to her faith, there was this one instance where Angela was portrayed as being overly judgmental towards Oscar Nuñez’s character Oscar, a gay coworker. Surprisingly, this led the actress to take a stand against the joke and approach the show’s creator, Greg Daniels, to express her concerns and demand that he remove it from the show.

“One of the scariest things I’ve ever seen”: The Office Spent $12,000 for a Stunt That Left Angela Kinsey Petrified in One of the Best Ever Episodes
According to Kinsey, who played the highly religious character of Angela Martin on the show, was once bothered by a joke from the S3E1 ofThe Office, Gay Witch Hunt. Therein, speaking with Rainn Wilson, the actress opened up about how she was depicted as overly judgmental towards Oscar, a gay coworker played by Oscar Nuñez.
Yeah, actually, there were one or two times in which there would be a joke written for her that I thought was just really stereotypical, maybe one note. I like to think of her as a full, well-rounded person.

I do remember I remember there was a particular storyline between Angela and Oscar, where Angela was being super judge-y. I never went up to Greg about any joke, but there was a joke at Oscar’s expense, and I went up to Greg [Daniels] and I was like, ‘I can’t.’
DespiteThe Office’s reputation for pushing boundaries with humor,Angela Kinseyrecalled how the joke seemed too harsh and felt like it crossed a line. Therefore, being raised to have a meaningful relationship with her faith, the actress noted how the particular joke didn’t sit right with her, leading her to refuse to perform it.

Angela Kinsey took a stand and demanded Greg Daniels remove the joke
Instead of letting it slide, Angela Kinsey took the step of demanding the showrunnerGreg Danielsto remove the joke, altogether. Despite knowing how comedy was meant to push boundaries, Kinsey decided to take action against the joke that she felt was too far for her character.

Therefore, reaching out to Greg Daniels, with her concerns, Kinsey expressed how she felt the joke stereotypical and that it was damaging to her character’s portrayal, especially considering her religious background. She toldRainn Wilsonduring the interview how she made it clear that she wanted the joke removed from the show.
I just was like, ‘I don’t feel good about it. I don’t feel good about that. I don’t feel like that’s what Jesus represented to me. And he was like, ‘OK.’ And he heard me, and he took the joke out.

And the episode, it was ‘Gay Witch Hunt,’ had so many already. But that’s the one pivotal moment I remember being like, OK, this is feeling like a stereotype and very one note. I feel like she has more depth than that.
Eventually, Angela Kinsey’s demand was heard by Greg Daniels who agreed to make the change. But then again, there were several such moments in the show that might have faced different outcomes, hadThe Officebeen released in recent times. For example, the antics in theDiversity Dayepisode where the characters pretended to be other races, might have sparked serious backlash among today’s sensitive audience.

The Officeis currently available to watch on Peacock.
