The real drama onCriminal Mindsdidn’t happen on-screen. Instead, it happened all behind the curtains, and the star performer was none other than Thomas Gibson! The actor got kicked out from CBS Television Studios after an investigation was launched pertaining to an on-set showdown.

Allegedly, Gibson kicked writer-producer Virgil Williams during the filming of an episode he was directing. Let’s just say, things got way toohands-on, or should we say,feet-on,pretty quick! Here’s the inside scoop!
Thomas Gibson Kicked His Way Out ofCriminal Minds!
Thomas Gibson’s tenure onCriminal Mindscame to a kicking stop, both literally and figuratively, in 2016. While directing a Season 12 episode, Gibson reportedly“instinctively”kicked writer and co-executive producer Virgil Williams in the shin during a heated argument over creative differences. CBS swiftly suspended him and, just days later, fired him.

He later issued a statement expressing his regret, writing (viaThe Wrap),
There were creative differences on the set and a disagreement. I regret that it occurred. We all want to work together as a team to make the best show possible. We always have and we always will.

Gibson also explained his side of the story toTMZthat the writer had become“aggressive,”claiming his actions were merely“retaliation.”
He further added,

I love Criminal Minds and have put my heart and soul into it for the last 12 years. I had hoped to see it through to the end, but that won’t be possible now. I would just like to say thank you to the writers, producers, actors, our amazing crew, and, most importantly, the best fans that a show could ever hope to have
But the damage was already done, and his run as the no-nonsense FBI chief Aaron Hotchner was over. While Hotch was known for keeping his cool under pressure, the man behind the role proved he wasn’t quite the same, proving that sometimes the realdramahappens when the cameras aren’t rolling.

Thomas Gibson’s First Two Strikes Before the Final Kick
However, it turns out, this wasn’t even Thomas Gibson’s first rodeo! His exit fromCriminal Mindswasn’t just about one ill-timed kick, it was strike three in a five-year streak of controversies that finally confirmed his ticket out.

Back in December 2010, Gibson reportedly (viaTMZ) shoved assistant director Ian Woolf during a late-night shoot, earning himself a studio-mandated anger management class. The results of the eight hours of therapy didn’t exactly stick.
As, in January 2013 (viaTODAY), Gibson was also arrested on suspicion of DUI after allegedly attempting to drive through a cordoned-off area. He later pleaded no contest to alcohol-related reckless driving.

By 2016, when the infamous shin-kicking incident with writer Virgil Williams occurred, CBS and ABC Studios had clearly had enough. And thus, with three strikes, Gibson was out.
