Despite all the comparisons, there is only one rival who truly sticks out in Eiichiro Oda’s mind.
Eiichiro Oda Admits He Can’t Measure Up ToShaman King’s Author
Inan interview,Eiichiro Odawas asked between all his rivals who sticks out the most in his mind. The author immediately answered that the most unforgettable rival was Hiroyuki Takei, the mangaka ofShaman King. Oda then reveals that he had always seen Takei-sensei’s fantastic art sense. Both of them were assistants for the mangaka of Rurouni Kenshin.
He continues to make me feel like, “Woah! That’s awesome!”, even now. He just makes these drawings and compositions with ease and I just have to say, “There’s no way I could possibly draw that.”

Hiroyuki Takei has a very clean and distinctive art style among mangakas.Shaman Kinghas easy to understand panels with almost no cluttering. The manga has clear depictions of everything that happens, and the action sequences are also portrayed in a concise manner.
Eiichiro Oda’s art style, on the other hand,has been criticized as being weird.Thus, when the mangaka began to observe the artwork ofShaman King,he quickly realized how realistic it was. Thus, a rivalry naturally arose in Oda’s mind after seeing Takei’s beautiful work.

Before Eiichiro Oda began his own serialization, he worked as an assistant for the author ofRurouni Kenshin, Nobuhiro Wakatsuki. In the interview, theOne Pieceauthor recounted his experience. Oda admitted that he didn’t work under Watsuki for too long. He had only worked full-time every week for four months before he wanted to prepare for his own upcoming manga. During the planning phase of his new serialization, Oda only worked every other week.

Other than learning all the skills to become a mangaka, Oda also made some great connections as Wakatsuki’s assistant.

The interviewer stated that for some time, the most popular Shonen Jump manga authors all came from Wakatsuki’s place. The Rurouni Kenshin author had mentored manga artists likeShaman King‘s Hiroyuki Takei,Mr. Fullswing‘s Shinya Suzuki, Oda himself, and more. Eiichiro Oda explained that all the assistants wanted to create their own works and were pretty determined about it. The author was extremely happy when some of his assistant colleaguessuccessfully fulfilled their dreams.
