While there was not a lot of hype forThe Penguin, fans just cannot get enough of what the show has to offer. James Gunn knows that he has quite the deal on his hands, and could leverage it for his own DCU should he want to.

While The DCU seems to be shaping up to look different from what the MCU has done so far, James Gunn has a unique opportunity to do something that has largely been on the fringes of superhero cinema. While there have been works that focus on heroes, anti-heroes, and those that surround them, rarely has there been any work that focuses on the villains.

James Gunn could take cues fromThe Penguin, and introduce villain-driven stories in his DCU

LikeJokerandThe Penguinafter it, the DCU could launch a whole new dimension in superhero cinema, focusing on the heroes and villains that populate its universe, to create a nuanced take on the superhero genre. So far, whether it be the MCU or other superhero fiction, the focus has solely been on heroes and their struggles, while the villains have been relegated to one-time antagonists in these films.

The Penguinchanged that, allowing the focus to be on a villain who has not necessarily become a good guy, as is the case withAgatha All AlongandBlack Adam. Something similar was done with Joker, Todd Phillips’ commercial success that was set outside the DCEU. James Gunn could leverage this trend by including films and shows in his DCU which could exclusively follow the many iconic villains of the the various heroes from the DC Canon.

While it is expected that there will be stories about characters like The Flash, Shazam, and Cyborg, James Gunn could introduce shows and films that follow characters like Darkseid, Reverse Flash, and Sinestro, fleshing out their backstories and explaining how they come to blows with the heroes that we see in the DCU.

The DCU already has villains that could put the MCU to shame

With Lex Luthor already making an appearance in the DCU, fans know for a fact that, unlike the MCU, the character will probably have more appearances in the narrative of the franchise. It is hard to imagine any of the main rogue galleries of the Justice League members will be put on ice for good, which is a problem that the MCU has been facing for quite some time. Iconic villains like Red Skull, Hela, Malekieth, and Justin Hammer were relegated to being one-film-only characters, that essentially disappeared for good after a single appearance.

The DCU could not only keep around iconic villains but delve into their pasts. If the writing team thatJames Gunnhas could be as competent as the one behind The Penguin, the DCU could be a goldmine of stories that could outpace the MCU very quickly, even with Marvel Studios now having access to the X-Men.
