After a positive early access period and subsequent full release, developer Red Barrels continues to add new content toThe Outlast Trials.
Project Lupara is the first major update since the game was fully released in March, and it features a ranged enemy, something players haven’t had to deal with until now. We’re introduced to Franco ‘Il Bambino" Barbi in ahorrifying trailer, a psychosexual manchild with a penchant for sawn-off shotguns.

Homicidal Manchild
The trailer released for Barbi tells a compelling story of a man obsessed with dragging others down to his level of insecurity and impotence. Also, Murkoff has given him a gun, for some reason. I’m certainly not looking forward to avoiding my shotgun-firing limping pursuer.

Nothing brings friends together like being chased by a naked giant and a leatherclad cop.
The addition of a ranged character adds a new dynamic to The Outlast Trials as players will now have to be aware of firing lines and range. A new map, The Docks, has also been added. This area is the site of Barbi’s heroin empire and the setting of a new trial, ‘Poison the Medicine’. Naturally, you’ll be trying to poison Barbi’s heroin supply.

Barbi can also appear in other trials for four weeks to mark the release of Project Lupara. There’s a whole host of other additions too, including new difficulty settings, daily and weekly challenges and cosmetic catalogues. A new mini-game based on the Stroop Effect has also been added.
An entirely new roguelike game mode, Escalation Therapy, sees the player face a never-ending barrage of randomised trials in a permadeath format. You’ll begin with nothing and build your loadout up by completing trials.
A new Barricade rig has been added, allowing you to block off pathways to buy yourself time. Red Barrels has teased that new rigs are on the way in future updates.
Project Lupara launches on July 16 on all platforms.
