The Oscars season is upon us, and what better way to anticipate the event than to predict who’s going to bag the coveted and prestigious awards? For decades, the award-giving body has been recognizing the hard work and efforts of the creative industry, although each season has its own bit of controversy.

This year, one of the biggest debates in the business is how Oscar predictions seem to leave out Denis Villeneuve’sDune: Part Twofrom most of the major categories when the movie emerged as a commercial and critical success.
Brian Cox slammed the Oscars for allegedly practicing recency bias
Several entertainment outlets have revealed their own lists of Oscar predictions starting last month, and it surprised many fans after seeingTimothée Chalamet’sDune: Part Twoexcluded from the roster. Of course, these are only predictions and not official announcements from the Oscars, so there is a chance that the science fiction movie will still make it to the final round.
This trend, however, can be explained through the phenomenon calledrecency bias, or the act of giving more importance to recent experiences in estimating future events. It’s quite noticeable how the Oscars seemingly choose nominees among films released during the final quarter rather than throughout the year.

In short, those projects released during the Oscars season, which is around Thanksgiving to Christmas time, get more attention than those that premiered in spring and summer. In fact, veteran actorBrian Coxhas the same sentiment about the prestigious event and its tendency to lean on recency bias.
In his interview withThe Hollywood Reporter, he called out the Oscars for snubbing his performance inChurchillwhile giving the nomination toGary Oldmanwho starred inDarkest Hour. Both of them portrayed the same character, Winston Churchill, but Oldman’s performance received more commendation than Cox’s. “The Oscars are absolute nonsense because everything that’s judged in the Oscars, it’s not a year’s work,” he remarked.

‘Wicked’ Defeating ‘Dune: Part Two’ With Critics Choice Awards Nominations Is a Bad Oscars Omen
The Scottish star noted that there are a lot of other great works outside of the Oscars season, and he laments that his movie got overlooked because of its release window.Churchillpremiered in the summer of 2017, whileDarkest Hourwas released around December, perfect timing for the Oscars predictions.
Dune: Part Two’s release window may affect its chance of getting nominated for the Oscars
Now, it seems like there’s a high chance that the Oscars has forgotten what a spectacular movieDune: Part Twowas because of its March release date. Nobody remembers films from the first half of the year and everyone is more focused on the recent theatrical openings and those upcoming ones. Fans should brace themselves in case the epic sci-fi movie gets snubbed again for Best Picture.
Real Reason Why Hans Zimmer Failed to be Eligible for Oscars 2025 With Dune 2: End of an Era?
Chalamet, on the other hand, still has a chance to bag theBest Actor award, especially after his much-hyped performance in the biopic filmA Complete Unknown, which released this month, so it’s safe to say that it is within the radar of the Oscars season.
