Though her star-studded career has also been marred by controversy in one too many incidents, Blake Lively has achieved a lot nonetheless. Not only does this include her becoming one of the most commended actresses in all of Hollywood, but it also includes her meeting the love of her life aka her husband and the father of their children, Ryan Reynolds.

But back when she was yet to take this full-time leap into this field, there was a time that Lively almost took a decision that nearly cut short her career in Hollywood and would have even made her finding Reynolds pretty much impossible: Her decision to quit acting for college, which could have, though, saved her from all these controversies.
Blake Lively’s one decision could have almost cut her career short
For one who found herself becoming a sensation and renowned name in Hollywood globally through her performance as Serena van der Woodsen,Blake Livelywasn’t all on board the showGossip Girlright from the start. To say the least, she didn’t really want to take on the role of the blonde queen who made her a household name in the entertainment industry overnight.
As she explained the reasoning behind this in an interview withVanity Fair, “I realized that [acting] was a business as much as a craft. People will go see your movie based on your standing and all of that, and it didn’t make sense to me because I was 18 and being an artist.” That said, her response to the casting call was:

I said, ‘No, I want to go to college. Thank you, though.’
Had she gone forward with that decision, Lively probably wouldn’t have met her husband and the love of her life,Ryan Reynolds, whom she first met on the sets ofGreen Lantern(2010). That’s not all; had she chosen her college life over her career, she could have beenspared all the controversy that she ended up pulling, especially after her sleeper blockbusterIt Ends with Us.

For those unversed in the controversies surrounding the domestic abuse-themed flick, while the book-based movie turned out to be a massive cash cow for the creators, Lively’s feud with co-starJustin Baldonihad a barrage of controversies surrounding the film. Currently, the pair are embroiled in a heated legal battle, withthe former suing her co-star for s-xual harassment.
Of course, all of this could have been avoided and cut the actress’ career short in the first place as well, had she taken the bold decision to pursue her college degree instead. However, as it turns out, the masterminds behind the show pitched a really good option for her to consider, which had Lively rethinking her decision and becoming one of the most renowned actresses of all time.

What made Blake Lively get into acting
When Blake Lively expressed her concerns about attending college instead when pitched the role of Serena van der Woodsen inGossip Girl, the CW executives presented her with the perfect solution as they promised her that she would be given time in her filming schedule to attend her classes at New York’s Columbia University. As she shared during the same interview:
Then they said, ‘Okay, you can go to Columbia one day a week. After the first year [of the show Gossip Girl], it’ll quiet down. Your life will go back to normal and you can start going to school. We can’t put it in writing, but we promise you can go.’ So that’s why I said, ‘Okay. You know what? I’ll do this.’

Since the promise seemed fair enough, shedidhop on board back then. But, of course, that arrangement didn’t entirely end up working out, as Lively continued to share with a laugh, “This is advice to anyone: when they say, ‘We promise, but we can’t put it in writing,’ there’s a reason they can’t put it in writing. But no, the show didn’t slow down. It just got more and more.”
Well, either way, Lively chose what she did and her career and personal life ostensibly took a dramatic turn (perhaps as dramatic as her own self) when she chose to pursue acting over college. And while this decision led to her becoming a renowned actress and marrying Reynolds, it also entangled her in controversies that continue to surround her, so that’s that as well.
Gossip Girlcan currently be streamed on Netflix.
