Charlize Theron’s immortal mercenary Andy will return inThe Old Guard 2on Netflix. Nearly five years after the first film, the streamer has finally announced a release date for the film. The first film,The Old Guard, was released in 2020 and was a viewership hit for Netflix. The critical acclaim and popularity of the film resulted in a sequel being greenlit.
According to reports, the sequel starring Theron completed filming in 2022, but it went to development hell due to a delay in post-production. Despite the troubles, Theron was confident that her film would see the light of day. Last year, she announced that the film had resumed its post-production works.
It is also possible that the films could be made into a trilogy, with one of the producers confirming that the second film leaves scope for a third potential film. In addition to the old cast of the first film, several new names including Uma Thurman have a role inThe Old Guard 2.

Theron spoke toVarietyabout the delay in the project, when she appeared at the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project Block Party. Theron revealed that the sequel had wrapped filming in 2022 but a change in Netflix leadership caused ashutdown of the post-productionof the film.
Theron shared that the film had undergone five weeks of post-production by that time. Despite the long delay in bringing the project to the screen, Theron shared that she had high hopes for the film and that she was excited about it. TheTullyactress shared:
Netflix went through quite a changeover. We got kind of stuck in that and our post-production shut down, I think, five weeks into it. They were going through a lot of changes, and I totally understand it. We finally picked it back up and I’m really excited about it.
The regime change at Netflix wasn’t the only reason that delayed the film. The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes also impacted the film as they were unable to complete the reshoots of the film. At one point, there were rumors that the film might get shelved. However, Netflix didn’t pull aBatgirlmove on this film and fans are truly grateful.

Charlize Theron will be the prime attraction of the film, returning to her role of Andromache of Scythia aka Andy. Also reprising their respective roles from the earlier film are KiKi Layne, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Schoenaerts’ Booker is sentenced to loneliness for 100 years as a punishment for his betrayal in the last film. However, in the final scene of the film, we see Booker meeting Quỳnh, played by Veronica Ngô. We don’t see much of Ngô in the last film except for the immortals’ story of Quỳnh, who was sentenced for witchcraft and cast into the sea 500 years ago.
Ngô is expected to have a larger role. The sequel film also addsUma Thurmanand Henry Golding to the cast. Golding was seen as a member of Andy’s team in the newly released sneak peek of the film. Victoria Mahoney replaces Gina Prince-Bythewood as the director of the sequel. It wasn’t the only replacement in the film as Max Aruj and Ruth Barrett replaced Volker Bertelmann and Dustin O’Halloran as the music composers for the film.

The one question fans want answered would be the reason for the long-lost Quỳnh to lurk in the exiled Booker’s apartment. Victoria Mahoney, who was director of the second unit of J.J. Abrams’Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, was excited to work with“this caliber of actors in one bundle”(via Tudum).
She shared,“I wanted desperately to explore their ability to chase story beats inside of action beats.”Fans will get to see her most recent work in February as she directed the pilot episode of theSuitsspinoff,Suits L.A. She has promised that the action will be bigger and better than the first film.

In the video, Theron can be seenperforming some amazing stuntsthat almost remind fans of Tom Cruise. TheFast Xactress wields a knife in one of the scenes and fights off the enemy. This badass stunt is, however, not the most shocking part of this sneak peek. For one action sequence, Theron can be seen hanging off the side of a helicopter.

The possibility of a trilogy was teased by the film’s producer, Marc Evans, who toldVarietyin May 2023,“There’s an ending to No. 2 that kind of demands a No. 3, which makes me very happy.”Theron has yet to comment on a potential third film, but her excitement for the films makes a trilogy a likely possibility.
