Despite the series being one of the most viewed on the streaming giant, I was one of the few to stand up to power by giving the first season ofThe Night Agent a lousy review. The series received an alarming amount of praise only because the finale finally showed some energy that the previous nine episodes sorely lacked.

However, the second season, streaming on Netflix on January 23rd, never builds on that momentum. It has less intrigue and stagnant action and still suffers from a lack of chemistry between the leads—not to mention more eye-rolling plot shifts designed to move the story along, which still do not work inThe Night Agent’ssecond season.

Netflix’sThe Night AgentReview and Synopsis

The second season continues to follow Peter Sutherland (Hillbilly Elegy’sGabriel Basso), who is now a full-fledged “Night Agent” after saving President Travers (Kari Matchett) from an assassination attempt. Sutherland is on assignment with Alice (Brittany Snow), a veteran of the agency trained by Peter’s new boss, Catharine (an excellent Amanda Warren), who doesn’t trust him.

Unfortunately, that means Rose (Luciane Buchanan) is separated from Peter, who is off on assignment in Southeast Asia and working in Silicon Valley. However, she helps develop identification software that can track anyone worldwide and uses it to ensure Peter’s safety. After things go terribly wrong, Peter returns to the States on the run, involving Rose in a conspiracy that could bring the government to its knees.

Netflix’sThe Night AgentRemains a Hackneyed Spy Thriller

Netflix’sThe Night Agentis based on Matthew Quirk’s popular series of books. Shawn Ryan brought the series to Netflix for development and directed the season premiere, something he didn’t do for the first season. The episode has a certain energy, but only because of a sudden character demise designed to shock the audience.

That’s the carrot, but the stick is Peter must now track down someone selling CIA secrets—something we’ve seen thousands of times before. Ultimately, like its freshman outing, it is a mildly entertaining series because Basso is a likable young actor. Yet, the story is still a trite and diluted attempt at a genre that keeps getting recycled year after year.

Is Netflix’sThe Night Agentseason 2 Worth Watching?

The Night Agent’smain issue is that most plot points designed to move the story along are contrived to the point of head-scratching. Too often, these points are created to generate shallow character depth. Nothing about the story is remotely plausible. Furthermore, the series has a glaring pacing problem, particularly evident over a 10-episode season stretched beyond its limits.

Then there’s the issue at the show’s heart: the romance/friendship between Basso’s Sutherland and Buchanan’s Rose. They have absolutely zero chemistry. So, if either of them is in danger, it generates very little suspense when the other character acts with worry or concern. Scenes transition in clunky ways, for lack of a better term, while story shifts at the end of episodes designed to keep you binging come across as hackneyed.

The second season does nothing to learn from the first mistakes. The creators double down on them, and the series continues to suffer from them
