TheStar Warsfranchise has expanded in its scope beyond the story George Lucas originally set out to tell with his original and prequel trilogy of films. While the franchise continues to thrive, it has been relatively quiet on the big screen following the release of 2019’sThe Rise of Skywalker, which concluded the sequel trilogy.

Several projects for the future have been reported to be in development, the latest of which is a trilogy of films written and co-produced by Simon Kinberg. However, the unannounced trilogy could face the same fate as the other projects that were similarly reported to be in development but ended up being scrapped. Here is why the latestStar Warstrilogy might be in danger.

Lucasfilm has a disturbing habit of scrappingStar Warsmovies in development

TheStar Warsfranchise has yet to make its return to the big screen following the lackluster conclusion of the sequel trilogy in 2019. However, that isn’t for the lack of effort on Lucasfilm’s part, with several projects reported to be in development.

Since franchise spearheadGeorge Lucashanded over the reins toKathleen Kennedy, the space opera saga has expanded in new ways, especially with several TV shows added to the canon. However, when it comes to films, there has been a disturbing trend of several projects being canceled.

According to reports, Simon Kinberg has beentapped to write and co-produce a new trilogy ofStar Warsmovies. However, in the pastGame of Thronescreators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss were similarly reported to be developing a new trilogy (viaThe Hollywood Reporter), which was later scrapped.

Meanwhile, Kennedy confirmed in 2023 that director Rian Johnson’s proposed trilogy was also not a priority for the studio despite being in development for a few years (viaVariety). Other instances of projects quietly killed off in development include a Boba Fett film from Josh Trank and a Jabba the Hutt film from Guillermo del Toro (via/Film).

Simon Kinberg’sStar Warstrilogy could be the next victim of a disturbing Lucasfilm tradition

It is safe to assume that Kinberg’sStar Warstrilogy is fairly early in development, making it difficult to predict its fate. While we hope Kinberg gets to realize his vision for a film set in the galaxy far, far away, the recent history of in-development projects at Lucasfilm does not inspire much hope.

The biggest red flag over Kinberg’s planned trilogy is the lack of any official acknowledgment from Lucasfilm, something common with most previously canceled projects. Furthermore, the three theatrical films formally announced aside fromThe Mandalorian & Groguhave shown a lack of progress toward production.

TheDaisy Ridley-led filmis once again without a writer, casting doubts over its viability. At the same time, James Mangold’s film based on the Jedi’s origins, and Dave Filoni’s New Republic-centered movie also have no confirmed start dates. As a result, an entire trilogy of movies that aren’t even announced may have a tough chance of making it out of development.
