The world of crossovers will always be unexpected and a surprise to all the fandoms involved. Nobody expected this collaboration betweenNarutoandTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,a four-part miniseries about the two ninja universes colliding. Only the first issue ofTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Narutowas released on 12 July 2025 and the lore is already quite exciting yet nobody could’ve anticipated any of it. Not even Masashi Kishimoto, the creator ofNaruto,would’ve ever thought to write this about the legendary Kakashi.
The first issue of theTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Narutoreveals Kakashi somehow knows Splinter, also known as Hamato Yoshi in some editions, as he calls him out specifically. The greeting doesn’t have a lot of context and even fans are baffled as to how one mentor knows the other. Perhaps there’s a mentor support group across all ninja universes.

Kakashi’s mysterious and unexplained connection to Hamato Yoshi or Splinter is fascinating yet confusing. It ends on a cliffhanger as Kakashi speaks about deception. The mentors are actually quite similar so it’s surprising that Kakashi seems hostile towards him.

Kakashi’s past is tragic, defined by loss, betrayal, and his relentless pursuit of redemption. Losing his parents at a young age must’ve been hard but the ninja always prioritised his duties over everything. Despite his eccentric nature, he’s an honorable man and a great mentor. Similarly, Splinter’s backstory is rooted in an equal amount of tragedy as a respected ninja master betrayed by his rival Oroku Saki, the future Shredder, the main antagonist of theTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtleseries.
As one of Konoha’s most talented ninjas,Kakashi is admired by the entireNarutofandom, even most of the anime community has a crush on him, so it’s natural everyone’s curious about how he would even know Splinter. The panel is quite baffling and doesn’t entirely explain anything about why the crossover decided to give them lore at all.

Fans will have to wait for the next issues to truly understand the entire lore. We can only hopeTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Narutois going to explain their past and Kakashi’s sudden hostility towards Splinter, despite the ninja turtles and him helping Team 7 out.

The art style is very reminiscent of a classic American comic book which is a change for Team 7 andNaruto.We can only hope the upcoming issues will explain what Kakashi meant by “deception” as nobody would expect Splinter to be a traitor either.
