In the lead up toThe Last of Us Part II’sJune release date, Naughty Dog and Sony are releasing a new video about the game every week leading up to launch. For this week’s edition, Naughty Dog has decided to hone-in on the gameplay that is featured in the upcoming sequel.
For the most part,The Last of Us Part IIplays pretty similarly to the first game, although Naughty Dog has refined the survival-style experience in many ways. Perhaps first and foremost, the team behind the game discussed how it was important to not make Ellie feel as powerful as Joel was in the previous title. With Ellie now being the new main playable character, and also being smaller and weaker than Joel in size, Naughty Dog wanted to make sure that you couldn’t overpower every enemy that you see in the game.
Rather than allowing Ellie to defeat her enemies with brute force, however, Naughty Dog has injected a variety of new mechanics intoThe Last of Us Part IIto help you get a leg up on those that you may come across. One of those new additions comes in the way of a jump/clamber button that allows you to get to higher angles and dispatch enemies. Additionally, you can also now go completely prone in certain situations to help sneak around. While in this state, you can still use all of the items that you have on your character in addition to being able to crawl or hide in tight spaces.
To go along with most of these situations and new gameplay additions that Naughty Dog has outlined, this video also features actual footage showing most of the described portions of gameplay in action. The only downside (although this is surely to be expected) is that none of the gameplay fromThe Last of Us Part IIthat we see in this video is really new. Much of it is repurposed footage from past showings for the game that have come about in recent years. Still, seeing this footage matched up with the development team’s reasons and descriptions of why they have been added to the game adds a lot of insight and is defintely worth a watch if you’re excited to play it in a few short weeks.
