It didn’t take long forThe Gooniesto become a classic staple in cinema history. Who knew an adventure-comedy about a bunch of kids living in the Goon Docks would become such an important and nostalgic part of many lives? As the kids embark on a treasure hunt, their humor-filled and heartfelt moments resonate with the viewers on some level or the other. For many,The Gooniesis a trip back to their own childhood.

Thus, a report talking about the reboot of the 1985 Richard Donner classic has fans both thrilled and a bit nervous. Thrilled because they’ll get to see their favorite story get an extension and nervous because, well, reboots don’t work out too well most of the time. However, there is one way the reboot could work, if it does happen, that is.
The One Thing That Can Make or BreakThe Goonies’ Reported Reboot
According toThe Sun’s report, a source confided that there had been a ton of discussions going on about the reboot of The Goonies for a long time. While things never escalated, it seems like the film has finally been cleared by Warner Bros. to move ahead.
The source stated,

The plan is to start developing the ideas for the follow up next summer, with a possible release date of 2026 or 2027.The original is so culturally significant, Warner Bros’ know they have to get it totally right.
The source also added that it is very“likely”that major stars from the original movie will return for the reported reboot although, the possibilities are endless. It looks like the kids were right about“Goonies never say die.”

Of course, reboots have a ton of potential when it comes to pleasing the audience, especially thanks to the nostalgia factor glued to it. However, it also takes very little for reboots to be rejected by the OG fandom.
Written bySteven Spielberg,The Goonieshas become a cult classic over the years and Warner Bros. will have to tread carefully when it comes to bringing the story back. One way they could ensure the film’s success is by keeping the kids exactly as they were in the 1985 film – full of crude humor.

WatchingThe Gooniesfor the first time might take you by surprise given the jokes made by the young characters. Whether it’s Mouth pranking a woman by telling her how she’s supposed to sort drugs or the p*nis of the Statue of David being the“mom’s favorite part,”the kids didn’t really hold back in the film.
Of course, 1985 was widely different from today and this particular element of the film might be difficult to translate into modern times. However, we firmly believe that this is the right way to do the reboot, if any. Perhaps they can take a page out ofGood Boys‘ (2019) handbook on how to deal with such humor in a modern setting.

Josh Brolin Might Not be a Fan of the Reboot
While the idea of a reboot sounds interesting, actorJosh Brolindoesn’t seem to be too supportive. He played the role of Brandon “Brand” Walsh in the film, a high-school athlete and older brother to Mikey (Sean Astin).
He loved his time onThe Goonies, especially since it was his first time on a film set. During Yahoo’sRole Recall, Brolin called it a“profound experience.”He added that the film will always stand as“one of the greatest experiences”of his life.

After sharing his favorite memory from the film, he got candid about the need for a sequel. Much to some fans’ dismay, Brolin doesn’t think a sequel or a reboot is actually necessary. He said,“Personally, why? Do you know what I mean? I don’t like it.”
Brolin added,
The movie exists in a really wonderful way, generation after generation I get to see that. I just got a text the other day of a guy who had showed his daughter the movie for the first time and then he kind of regressed into seeing it for the first time, it’s so wonderful.
The actor doesn’t think it’s a good idea to try to outweigh the original film with a sequel/reboot after all these years.
I mean, it’s such a wonderful thing that exists that you get to see affect people, and why do you need to weigh it out with something else? Tell me, what would it be like?
Does this mean that if the reported reboot actually ends up going through, we wouldn’t see Brolin among those returning to their roles? Or will he take his words back and show up after all?
The Gooniesis available to rent/buy on Prime Video.
