Death Strandingis considered one of the best video games ever released. The game was praised for its cinematic style, highly innovative takes, and unique world, with fans demanding a film adaptation. It has now been confirmed that the action title’s movie adaptation is moving forward.

The Death Stranding live-action film adaptation is moving forward at A24, the studio behind Academy Award winner film Everything Everywhere All At Once.

A24, a New York-based independent studio is collaborating with Kojima Productions to adapt the popular video game into a live-action feature movie, and gaming auteur Hideo Kojima, the creator of the video game will also be involved in the production of the film as he had already stated.

Death Stranding Live Action Film Is in Development at A24

The first news regarding the movie adaptation came last year as Kojima Productions and Hammerstone Studios confirmed that they have partnered to work on aDeath Strandingmovie. A24 has now released a DS-inspiredT-shirtwith the A24 logo and announced that it has partnered with Kojima Productions to adapt the popular video game into a live-action film.

The studio also made the announcement on its officialX/Twitterhandle. Kojima Productions also announced viablog postthat the movie is in the works with the studio. The news comes days before Kojima Productions’ 8th anniversary on December 16th. A brief description of the game reads:

The studio has collaborated with Kojima Productions and Kojima will be involved in the project.

The film promises to delve into the mysteries surrounding the apocalyptic event called the “Death Stranding”, which blurred the lines between life and death, and brought forth nightmarish creatures into a world on the brink of collapse.

Kojima also praised A24 saying that the films the studio develops are of high quality and have inspired some of his works as well. He mentioned that their“innovative approach”aligns with Kojima Productions and thus they are making the movie together. Kojima stated:

The films they are delivering to the world are high in quality and very innovative. I have been attracted to their creations and they have even inspired my own work. Their innovative approach to storytelling aligns with what Kojima Productions has been doing for the last 8 years. Now, we are making a Death Stranding movie together.

He also stated his reasons for choosing the studio to work on the film saying:

There are a lot of “game adaptation films” out there but what we are creating is not just a direct translation of the game. The intention is that our audience will not only be fans of the games, but our film will be for anyone who loves cinema. We are creating a Death Stranding universe that has never been seen before, achievable only through the medium of film, it will be born.

However, no other details about the movie including casting or who will be directing the film have been announced as of now.Death Strandinggame launched in 2019 and is directed by Hideo Kojima. The game starred some of the best A-list actors; Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Guillermo del Toro, Margaret Qualley, and Lea Seydoux.

The story of the game is set in the apocalyptic United States where a cataclysmic event has taken place. The game received a great reception from fans and critics alike and has sold over 16 million copies across platforms. Kojima also confirmed that the sequel of the game is under development at The Game Awards 2022.

A24 is an “indie studio” behind Academy Award winner movies likeEverything Everywhere All at Oncewhich picked up seven Oscars including Best Picture. It has made a big name in the industry and has a cult following which continues to increase with its recent movie and show productions likeBeef,Uncut Gems,Lady Bird,Hereditary, and more.

The movies and shows from the studio have been praised for their unique takes on subjects and it is a studio that is fit to helm the adaptation of the acclaimed game. It is not yet known when the live-action film adaptation will land on silver screens or if the original cast from the game will be returning to reprise their roles. However, more details could arrive soon now that it is official.
