The third opening ofThe Apothecary Diaries, In Bloom, sung by Lilas Ikuta, featured some gorgeous and interesting visuals that potentially spoil the second season’s events for fans.
A curious visual from the new opening theme was the 10 items in Maomao’s hands that popped up for less than 2 seconds. All of them are things Maomao holds dear and somewhat foreshadows future events ofThe Apothecary Diaries.

Here are the details for all 10 items displayed in the opening theme.
1Jinshi’s hairpin
This one is relatively self-explanatory. While Maomao might be denying Jinshi’s feelings towards her, it’s quite apparent what he feels. The fact that she holds it dear to her is also proof of her own feelings.
The hairpin is a blatant declaration that Maomao is special to him. It’s a way of courting her, a fact that she’s probably denying.

The Apothecary Diaries Season 2 Opening Is Good but It Can Never Surpass This Masterpiece
It’s a highly romantic gesture that doesn’t just mean he intends to date her. Giving a hairpin signifies that the person is under his care, and thus, he intends to marry her as well. Maomao holding it dear to her meansshe might be accepting it subconsciously.
2A lantern plant can induce abortions
In a much darker turn forThe Apothecary Diaries,Lihua’s cousin, Shin, collected perfumes carrying a miscarriage-inducing drug, the lantern plant, intending to use them on Lihua.
Shin’s jealousy led her to do one of the most heinous acts in the series. The Wise Consort had already lost one son, and couldn’t risk losing another. Jinshi, thankfully, caught her cousin in time and she confessed.

3A medicine packet Maomao will give to Ailan
As one of Gyokuyou’s ladies-in-waiting, Ailan is hard-working and takes her duties seriously. So seriously, she falls ill.
She spends the night at the clinic to isolate herself away from others. To aid her recovery, Maomao gives her a cold medicine packet she made herself.

4Mushrooms that unravel a big mystery
Without giving away too much, it turns out several consorts were dying due to an unknown type of food poisoning from mushrooms. The mushrooms, according to Maomao, cause severe swelling and body disfigurement.

Orpiment is a mineral from which arsenic is sourced. One of Jinshi’s childhood toys is made out of it too. Maomao immediately suspects the paint is filled with it.
6White blossom
This item once again foreshadows what happens between Lihua and her cousin, Shin.
The white blossom might be poisonous and was another attempt at killing Lihua.
7Maomao’s mourning band
In the previously mentioned murder mystery, Maomao will be required to wear a mourning band for the deceased Consort’s funeral.

8Shisui’s unusual love for bugs
Shisui is one of the most mysterious and interesting characters inThe Apothecary Diaries. She has a love for bugs, including moths.
While the moth is rather luminescent and can reference something else, the most direct connection is Shisui and how she bonded with Maomao over them.
9Maomao buys Xiaolan a ribbon
As Maomao’s little informant, Xiaolan’s friendship with her is unconventional but wholesome. She’s a low-profile servant who overhears rumors often, feeding them to Maomao.
At some point in the second season, the protagonist will buy the little girl a ribbon at the caravan.
As the romantic tension between Maomao and Jinshi ramps up, so does their physical attraction towards each other. In an infamous cave scene,The Apothecary Diariesfanswill witness the steamiest exchange between them.
What does a frog have to do with Maomao and Jinshi? You’ll have to wait and see as the second season’s opening clearly indicates several times that it will include this specific scene.
