Upon the film’s release,Dunkirkreceived rave reviews with an iconic portrayal of war, patriotism, and the sense of time on the battlefield! During that time,Christopher Nolansat for an interview withTime Magazineand that is what they discussed, time.
It’s a very different world than when I made Batman Begins, where I felt I was really able to express something about what I felt. Right now individual voices in mainstream filmmaking are a little bit buried by the concept of the existing franchise, which has become a very robust economic model for the studios.

He further continued,
But I think that will change. I think that the studios have always valued freshness and new voices. Hollywood has always valued the unexpected—even if Wall Street doesn’t.

Well, Nolan revealed these statements 7 years ago and since then, times have indeed changed. Despite veteran directors like Peyton Reed or Nia DaCosta working on movies likeAnt-Man 3andThe Marvels, the films have failed.

However, directors like Denis Villeneuve and Ari Aster are breaking these chains with their unique and creative films.
Why WasDunkirkSuch A Short Film?
With a runtime of 1 hour and 46 minutes,Dunkirkis the shortest film that Christopher Nolan has ever created except his debut filmFollowing. With intense battle scenes and a piece of visceral and often jarring music by Hans Zimmer, Nolan revealed that this film was an experiment.
As the interview further continued, theTenetdirector revealed thatDunkirkwas an experiment in which he put audiences straight into the battlefield. With no time for buildups or backstories, Nolan wanted the audience to headfirst into the World War II experience.

I wanted to tell the story primarily in visual terms and not through the usual theatrical devices of people discussing backstory. I wanted to throw the audience straight into this very intense, snowballing series of events that in my films you normally only find in the third act.
The director further stated that this was the reason why the film was a bit short since people wouldn’t be able to suffer too much in this chaos.
I felt the intensity of the experience would be such that there would be a saturation point where people couldn’t sit through anymore. For that reason it felt important that it be as short as possible.
Although thedirector received some complaints about his scenes fromBatman Begins,we can all agree that Nolan is one in eight billion.
