Taylor Sheridan once teased fans with his take on high-octane, gritty storytelling, but when it came toSicario 3, he closed the door before it even opened. After his personal trilogy, Sheridan already waved off the idea of rejoining theSicariosquad. He felt his journey with the franchise wrapped up neatly, leaving no room for creative déjà vu.

His decision set the tone: originality over repetition, even if it meant leavingSicarioin his rearview.

Taylor Sheridan’s personal trilogy: Crime, loss, and knowing when to stop

Taylor Sheridan shut down any hope of his return toSicariowith a firm resolve: he wasn’t interested in beating a creative dead horse. The American screenwriter called it quits after crafting his self-proclaimed trilogy, exploring thethemes of crime, justice, and loss. For him, three was the magic number; stretching it further risked monotony.

Hiscinematic trifecta started withSicario, a brutal dive into the U.S.-Mexico drug war. He followed it withHell or High Water, a sleeper hit that earned him a Best Original Screenplay nod. Wrapping it up wasWind River, a chilling western murder mystery set on a Wyoming reservation.

These three films formed what Sheridan called his “personal trilogy,” with each tacklingsimilar themes in distinct regions of America.

Sheridan wove these films into a thematic web, tackling issues like government failures, perceptions of authority, and personal grief. He linked the icy terrain ofWind Riverto the sun-scorched battlegrounds of his earlier works. Each story spotlighted different regions and challenges, yet shared a raw, intimate heartbeat.

However, Sheridan made it clear: the trilogy was a closed chapter. His goal wasn’t repetition but reflection — using these stories as an artistic and social lens. He explained (viaScreen Crush),

As you’re looking at jurisdiction and crime and the role of government and life, it deals with the failure — the failure of a government to the people it’s supposed to protect. On a much more intimate level, failure is a father, and overcoming that grief and suffering and how we do or don’t deal with it. Perceptions on people of authority, perceptions on gender and race. These are all things that these three films examine.

Sheridan continued,

If I find another world — I don’t want to continue, I don’t want the trilogy to become a sextet. [Laughs] I don’t want to write eight of these same things; that’s going to become monotonous and derivative. But I feel that, for this purpose, highlighting these three regions and highlighting issues that are different, but the same in these regions, for me was a really interesting artistic endeavor and a bit of a social endeavor.

Demi Moore hints at season 2 plans for Taylor Sheridan’sLandman

Despite mixed reviews for Taylor Sheridan’sLandman, Billy Bob Thornton’s commanding performance has been one of its few bright spots. The show’s dive into Texas’ oil business hasn’t fully struck a chord with audiences, but it’s sparked enough curiosity to raise the question: Will there be a season two?

No official word from Sheridan or Paramount+ yet, but star Demi Moore may have let it slip months ago. Speaking at Cannes, she shared, perTown & Country Magazine:

It’s a very interesting world in the boomtown of Fort Worth, Texas. It’s kind of this subculture that we haven’t seen before, which is what I think Taylor does so well. I thought we looked really good. He was lovely and I’ve known Billy Bob Thornton for a long time. I’ve already completed the first season and I’m excited for us to start the second which will be at the beginning of next year.
