Team Ninjahas announced Rise of the Ronin, an action RPG set in late 19th century Japan.
Rise of the Ronin debuted with a trailer atSony’s State of Play. The trailer gave us a flavour for the game, showing samurai in battle, scenes of Bakumatsu Japan life and even the player character taking flight with a sort of winged mechanism. As the name implies, you play as a Ronin. Bakumatsu is a tumultuous time for Japan, the Tokugawa Shogunate has just ended, civil war is brewing and Western influences are adding to the unrest spreading across the land. A ronin, for those unfamiliar, is a warrior without a master. They have free will and make their own choices. This is a fitting occupation for an action RPG protagonist if you ask me.
Team Ninja is a veteran studio and is no stranger to the action RPG genre. According to thedevelopment blog, they’ve been working on Rise of the Ronin for seven years. Parent companyKoei Tecmosuspects Rise of the Ronin will be one of the biggest challenges that the studio has ever faced.
Koei Tecmo shared “By harnessing all the skills and knowledge we’ve gained over the years we really wanted to take things to the next level by attempting to thoroughly portray the most critical revolution in the history of Japan including the darkest and ugliest chapters that many will shy away from.” The blog continued “This is undoubtedly the most ambitious and challenging project for Team Ninja Studio to date. Yet we will allow our experience in creating samurai and ninja action games to guide us through this journey.”
Rise of the Ronin promises to have a colourful host of characters, each with their own motivations. The goal is to showcase one of the most important periods in Japanese history in a “multilayered story” where “each decision you make will matter.”
Team Ninja’s newest project will release sometime in 2024 exclusively for the PlayStation 5.
