Super Mario RPGis a massive departure from the platforming standards that the Mario Games are known for. This game is one ofseveral Mario RPG games, and also stands as a remake on the Nintendo Switch for a JRPG style Mario game from the days of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System — Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.

There are a lot ofJRPGs that deserve a remakeand Super Mario RPG was definitely one of them. It packs all the expected JRPG elements such as party composition, many quests to complete, and even asecret bossto discover. Knowing which characters to put in your party and where they shine will be very important.

Mallow Super Mario RPG

Super Mario RPG

Early Magic Damage And Healing

Mallow is brilliant at hitting large groups all at once with high-damage magic attacks. He also has a wide range of different attacks for different situations. Being a mage-like character, it comes as no surprise that they can be rather squishy — which is very fitting due to their soft and puffy appearance. Another element of their mage-like nature is that they also have a large pool of FP that they can draw from. FP, which stands for Flower Points, is the game’s equivalent of MP, also known as Magic Points.

FP is what characters in the game will use for their special moves. This will be of great help in always having the resources to use whatever you need when you find yourself in need of it. Super Mario RPG is nowhere near as challenging and demanding as a lot of other JRPGs, and having Mallow in your party is not inherently “bad” in any way. In fact, you will only find a good replacement for them much later in the game, and you will definitely want them in your party until you can swap them out for Peach later.

Bowser Super Mario RPG

Bowser is truly outstanding early on in the game. Not only do they make for a brilliant Tank for your pary thanks to their high HP and defense stats, but they also put out some great attack damage numbers. By the end of the game, Bowser can boast the highest HP stats of any playable character and can really feel like nothing can take him down. However, once players get to the end of the game, they will see his damage numbers shy further and further from other characters.

10 Best Mario Games, Ranked

Mario is one of the most iconic video game characters of all time. With dozens of games under his belt, there are sure to be a few standouts.

While having a tank is great, especially for harder fights, your main focus should be defeating your opponents before they can defeat you. High damage output characters will make it much faster to win smaller fights and significantly improve your odds of victory against tough boss fights. Bowser may stand his ground well, but there are also a lot of bosses out there who can stand their ground even longer.

Best Damage Dealer

Mario is all about damage output, and if you could put together a party without Mario in it, it would under perform when compared to any party composition without him. Mario being in your party is mandatory, so all of your party compositions will require you to build around this very important fact. While he is best suited for physical attacks, he does possess some special moves as well. However, do not hope for him to provide any healing or support, as this plumber’s main focus should be on dealing as much damage on every turn as you are able to output.

It is best to leave the support to other characters such as Peach. Wiping out groups of enemies in a pinch is one thing, but Mario’s single-target attacks against bosses are what you will love most. Mario is also extremely versatile, as he has gear for seemingly any scenario and this can have him resist almost anything thrown his way.

Best Healer

While Mallow does possess some decent single-target healing options, it is nothing compared to Peach’s party healing. Having Peach use her turns to keep all her allies healthy means her allies can focus solely on pouring on the damage, making the need for a tank character completely non-existent. However, when an ally does go down, Peach is able to revive them and give you a second chance to bring everyone’s health right back up again.

One thing to note is that she is not made available early, so you will have to make due with Mallow in your party to act as the dedicated healer until then. Peach can put her primary focus on keeping everyone’s HP high and dealing some extra damage while nobody needs any healing — don’t underestimate what she can do with her frying pan in battles.

Peach Super Mario RPG

Best All Rounder

Geno does it all, he is an incredible damage dealer for both physical and special moves — coming in second only to Mario despite having the best starting attack stat. They also make for a great source of buffing allies. A team composed of Geno and Mario will see higher damage output than any team without the two of them — throw in Peach and you have a dream team in the making.

All that is left is to give them the right gear for the job. Geno not only fills any gaps your composition may have, but he excels in basically everything while also having a ridiculously high-speed stat. He is also the ultimate glass cannon, meaning you will want to make sure he is at full HP at all times. To counter how fragile Geno is, players should really learn to master Geno Boost. This ability will raise the attack stat by 50 percent, but when timed right will also raise the defense stat by 50 percent.
