Following the announcement ofRomeo is a Dead Man by Grasshopper Manufactureat Sony’s State of Play event, the studio didn’t specify when the game would be released, except that it would be sometime in 2026.

It wasn’t narrowed down whether it was early 2026, or which quarter they were targeting for the game’s launch. As it turns out, it’s all because of Grand Theft Auto 6.

Games That Took Longer Than GTA VI To Develop

Grasshopper, along with other video game publishers, are waiting on GTA 6’s release before deciding on when to release their game.

While not named outright by Grasshopper Manufacture, it’s pretty obvious they were referring to GTA 6 when they referred to it as “That One Game” in a statement (viaIGN). Suda51 explained why the game has a vague release window, stating, “That’s kinda obvious, isn’t it? That One Game had its release date announced, right? Every publisher wants to ensure to steer clear of That One Game’s release date. But what if we were to flex a little and release it on the same day… Yeah, nope — just thinking about that is way too scary. Alright then, see you later.”

Regardless of whether it’s a Japanese developer or a Western one, no one wants their game to get trampled by the Grand Theft Auto 6 juggernaut. Simply put: Grand Theft Auto is the biggest IP in all of gaming, and literally no one – not even Call of Duty – can stand in its way. Releasing a game near it means your game will probably get ignored, which means fewer sales. Not only that, but all attention will be on GTA 6, so even coverage might be an issue.

Take-Two Interactiveannouncedthe release date of Grand Theft Auto 6 as July 24, 2025, as part of a delay announcement that fans had been expecting. Following the release date announcement, Take-Two releasedan explosive second trailerthat had people doubting whether it was real or not.

The delay of GTA 6 meant that 2025 was clear for other video game companies to release their games, which we’re expecting a lot to take advantage ofsuch as EA’s Battlefield 6and more. The main issue for other game companies is what if Take-Two delays the release of GTA 6once again? Hopefully, that won’t be the case fir their sanity’s sake.
