Still Wake the Deepis a game that no one saw coming in 2024. It is a beautifully spun Lovecraftian tale mixed with the horror of 1982’sThe Thingand some Ken Loach magic added in for good measure. Put simply, it is one of the best horror games and one of the best games overall this year.

Now, seeing what developer The Chinese Room was able to achieve with the game, the player base seems ready for them to take on and create their rendition of the worst nuclear disaster in our civilization’s history. To be honest, if any developer can pull off the horror of the Chernobyl incident, it is indeed only them.
Still Wakes the Deep’s Fans Want the Game’s Developer to Recreate the Chernobyl Incident
In our review of the game, one of our most significant points of praise was the dev team’s effort to make the setting, the Oil Rig taken over by some incomprehensible being, feel like a living character playing their part in the story.
“This is basically M3gan but it’s fully AI”: Blumhouse’s New Horror Movie ‘Afraid’ Looks Creepy as AI Turns into a Serial Killer
From the very beginning, it becomes clear that the devs have done some spectacularly exhaustive amount of research over an equally extensive amount of time to bring the oil rig to life.
That said, perhaps the claustrophobia, confusion, and chaos created by such meticulous game design is what has now drawn the attention of a few fans of HBO’sChernobyl:

Admittedly, there are only a few developers out there who can take on the monumental task of recreating the disaster’s horror in the medium of a video game, andThe Chinese Roomis clearly one of them.
Given how they’ve always ingrained the different aspects of what it means to be a human in their horrific tales, coupled with their bonkers level of effort into everything they produce, they can well and truly pull it off.

What Would a Chernobyl-Themed Horror Game Made by The Chinese Room Be Like?
Coming to the speculation bit, while it is undoubtedly an excellent idea to do a proper horror game set during the nuclear disaster, executing the same in the medium of video games seems quite a daunting task.

Considering this, outside of the initial confusion during the initial steam explosions and meltdowns, there are really only a few things that one may translate into gameplay.
Not to mention, while a story structure similar toStill Wakes the Deepcan efficiently work for such a title, it is challenging to create a satisfying gameplay loop to keep players gripped.

Keeping that in mind, it is clear that The Chinese Room, should they decide to make such a game, will have to take some creative liberties to make it work. So, while it certainly won’t be historically accurate, a creatively inspired Eldritch tale similar to the one we got this year would undoubtedly be welcomed with open arms.
