With the most recent example being that ofPoor Things, the actress has become the perfect role model for young women, being successful but at the same time not being complaisantto a bigger issue.

One of the most perfect examples of her impact has to be her 2017Battle of the Sexeswith Steve Carell.

Emma Stone Became a Sad Exception

Hollywood is a brutal place for women, regardless of what level of success they are at. While changes have been happening, the speed at which they are being implemented is almost laughable. One of the most talked-about concepts in the industry that is still in practice is that the female stars of any project are paid significantly less than their male counterparts.

The practice is so common that it is rarer to see a film where both lead stars were paid equally than it is to see a film where the women were paid fractions in comparison to their male counterparts. Thankfully,Emma Stone’sBattle of the Sexestook its subject and message seriously to its very core.

Both Stone andSteve Carell, her male counterpart, are very big names in the industry and have an equally significant standing within the story. At the same time, in a regular instance, Stone would have been paid much less than Carell. However, the film decided to follow what it preached, as the actress revealed during an interview withThe Frame.

We were paid equally on the film.

The actress revealed that she and Carell were paid the same amount of money for their roles in the film. Following the theme of Billie Jean King’s life, who fought for women to get the same amount of prize money in tennis competitions, the film certainly became an exception in Hollywood’s sexist underbelly.

Emma Stone Wasn’t The Only One

The gender pay gap has become such a big deal even outside of the film industry that it is very rare to find a project where women are given the money that they deserve. So much so, that there are very few examples of stories similar to Emma Stone’s.

However, there are a few. Jennifer Lawrence has become very vocal about her advocacy for equal pay after she found out that she was paid significantly less than her male counterparts onAmerican Hustle. Another example would be that ofCharlize Theron, who is also very vocal about gender issues. When she was working onThe Huntsman: Winter’s War, she demanded that she get paid equally, earning as much as her male co-star, Chris Hemsworth.

Another star of the 2016 film,Jessica Chastain, has also been advocating for equal pay, not just for herself, but for her co-stars as well. The pay gap gets even more significant when it comes to women of color, who are paid even less compared to Caucasian women. During an interview withTime,Octavia Spencerrevealed that the actress fought for them to be paid equally.

I told her my story, and we talked numbers, and she was quiet, and she said she had no idea that that’s what it was like for women of color.

It is safe to say that the pay gap is a very big problem that is not seeing much change.
