The 2024 U.S. presidential election has shaken the country and the social media landscape is changing drastically, with many celebrities and publications, cutting off their ties with X (previously Twitter). The platform was once used for public discourse and celebrity engagement, but ever since Elon Musk acquired it in 2022, things have started to become increasingly controversial.

With claims of biased rhetoric, misinformation, and weird policies on the platform, several high-profile people are walking away. But who exactly are they, and what’s driving their decisions? Find out more about the celebrities who no longer want to be a part of Musk’s new-age social media.
Stephen King and Other Celebrities Leave Twitter/X
Recently, authorStephen Kingannounced that he would be leaving the platform because he felt all of it was too“toxic.”Two days before this tweet, he posted about a rumor that claimed he called Elon Musk,“Trump’s new first lady,”but he denied the news, saying,“I didn’t but only because I didn’t think of it.”
I’m leaving Twitter. Tried to stay, but the atmosphere has just become too toxic. Follow me on Threads, if you like.

I see there’s a rumor going around that I called the Musk-man Trump’s new first lady. I didn’t, but only because I didn’t think of it. There’s also a rumor going around that Muskie kicked me off Twitter. Yet here I am.
So, the author seems to have a clear dislike towards both Trump and Musk, but who knows if he’s getting off the platform due to his political stance? Jamie Lee Curtis and CNN’s Don Lemon have also deactivated their accounts. Curtis did not elaborate on her reasons, but she endorsed Kamala Harris during the election, which suggests that Trump’s win might have been the final straw (viaThe Standard).

Bette Milder also made a similar move, but she has always been public about her dislike for Trump. Her departure from X, along with Greg Davis, George Monbiot, and a major publication like The Guardian, reflects the dissatisfaction that prominent figures have had after the election results (viaNewsweek).
Why Are Celebrities Leaving Twitter/X?
Not everyone has made their motivations clear, but according to many users, the platform felt increasingly toxic. Since Musk’s takeover, people claim that the increase in controversial content, conspiracy theories, racism, and hate speech has only increased.
What people found more unsettling was the unban of neo-N*zis and problematic people such as Alex Jones. These recent changes have made users feel like X is no longer a safe space for having open and honest dialogue. Moreover, Musk’s decision to introduce a paid verification system, and“general amnesty”policy has made netizens question the platform’s integrity.

So, the departure of celebrities from X is no surprise, especially after Trump’s win and the alliance that he’s formed with Musk. Journalists, celebrities, and influencers want to be a part of a more moderated social media. And even though the site still has many dedicated users, its mass boycott doesn’t seem to be just a passing trend.
