Shonen anime likeBleachandOne Piecehave been hailed for the best battle scenes for too long. It’s time to make space for a new contender,Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End. The funny part is that the series isn’t even largely dependent on battles; it’s the journey of the protagonist’s self-discovery.

Yet, the anime has delivered some top-notch action scenes where the fights are short but packed with impactful blows. The animation is delightful, always paying attention to each and every move. This fantasy tale can easily take the mantle of one of the best Shonen anime.
Frierenis all about ‘show don’t tell’
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s Enddebuted in fall 2023 and aired a total of 28 episodes, in which it captured the hearts of fans from every genre. Be it action, fantasy, romance, or slice of life,Frierenhas it all. In fact, the protagonist has also been hailed asthe new queen of Shonenby various fans, and the anime has a huge hand in its increasing popularity.
The anime admittedly has a melancholic atmosphere as Frieren’s journey begins after the death of the beloved hero group. While it does have action,it’s more about Frieren realizing what she has lostand what was important to her before she lost them. But the biggest factor of them all is its ‘show don’t tell’ moments as the anime never overexposed the actions of characters or motives. Even the subtlest of expressions are portrayed beautifully enough to convey emotions.

The Secret Behind Frieren’s Name Doesn’t Just Hide Her Power But Something Much Sadder
The battles are not blown out of proportion, either. The movements are concise, and attention is drawn to the important moments. There is no shouting, grunting, or heaving in most of the battles, and no one shouts out the name of the move they are about to see.
Frieren‘s action scenes can rivalBleachandOne Piece
Frierenhas some of the best battle scenes in the Shonen anime space. Fern’s battle with Lugner and Stark’s fight against Linie has made the distinction quite clear. Both Fern and Stark had never faced a demon before, but as the battles progressed, it became clear that Frieren’s demonic training was all they needed.
The Coldest Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Scene Is Enough to Silence Fans Who Still Call It Overrated
Fern throws one attack after another at Lugner without breaking a sweat as the demon slowly realizes that he has been bested by a mere human. Once again, the animation is breathtaking, highlighting Fern’s casual attitude and Lugner increasingly panicking despite their expressions being minimal. The battle with Stark, on the other hand, had awesome choreography.
Another example of a battle done wight is Frieren and Fern fighting against Frieren’s clone. The fight was hellish with the clone firing one devastating spell after another, everything animated in painstaking detail. Due to Fern’s assistance, Frieren was able to push the clone into a corner, only for it to launch an otherworldly attack. The episode explored the true powers of Frieren that she normally hides away.

Frierenmanga is available to read on Viz Media, and the anime is currently streaming on Crunchyroll.
