That Horseradish isn’t a foe that needs to be felled, and it isn’t something that you have to avoid either. It is a foraged item that in the right hands can turn into a great resource as you rebuild your new life.

In the world ofStardew Valley, there are many foraged items a player can stumble across. The Horseradish is one most will find relatively early into their game, and it can be confusing what all it has in store for your farmer. This will help you shed some light on this fun addition to any person’s pantry.

When & Where To Find Wild Horseradish

Going out to get your foraged items can always be a bit of an enigma to players that don’t have mastery of all items inStardew Valley. Even some veterans can forget the best time to go get an item if they aren’t paying attention to the Valley around them and heading into the mines every day.

Spring is the only time of yearWild Horseradishwill be found naturally out in the wilds of the world. From day 1 until day 28, farmers can wander about and pluck these foraged items from the ground. They can also be grown outdoors in Spring from Spring Seeds. And yes. Like with almost all other seeded plants they can be grown indoors in any season in the greenhouse when it is unlocked.

Time of Day & Weather

Foraged items aren’t affected by the time of day and weather like other things in Pelican Town. In fact, it is better to save runs for foraged items to one day a week. Every Sunday the game resets the foraged items found on the ground, but new items are placed on the map every day. So those that want foraged items but don’t want to hunt for them every day are in luck. Just go out on a Saturday and look around to pick up a week’s worth of Horseradishes in one go!

Location(s)

Horseradish can be found almost anywhere a foraged seasonal item can drop. This encompasses the Cindersnap Forest, Secret Woods, Backwoods, Mountain Area, and the Forest Farm. While all of these places can spawn Horseradish, it is not a guaranteed drop. It spawns the highest in the Secret Woods and the Cindersnap Forest with a 50%+ drop rate, but is only available on the Forest Farm at 1 out of 4 times.

Horseradish Scaling

All foraged items scale based on a player’s foraging experience. The more you forage items and chop down trees the higher that foraging skill will get. Increasing it to level 10 will take no real effort on the average player’s part as they will need a lot of wood for building projects. This combined with experience from picking up foraged items they find on their walks will raise those numbers in no time at all.

Experience Rates

Picking all Horseradishes up gives the same amount of experience no matter what. That’s 7 exp per Horseradish, and there is no higher amount someone can gain from that. They aren’t like fish that scale in experience as the quality scales.

That’s not a bad thing though. Planting Spring Seeds and then waiting for them to be harvested is a great way to level your Foraging Skill fast. One, they don’t need to be watered after the initial planting. Two, they don’t need a scarecrow to be protected from crows. Three, they grow rather quickly in comparison to other crops and can be profitable in unique ways for those that enjoy some tea time.

Sale Prices

Sale prices on Horseradishes are determined by their quality just like most other gathered items in Stardew Valley. From the first one you pick that has no star next to it, to the Iridium quality ones that always drop with the Botanist Profession at level 10 Foraging. Selling them may not make you the richest farmer in all the Valley, but it can help edge out the last gold needed to buy your next backpack upgrade.

Uses Of Horseradish

Foraged items don’t have a laundry list of things they are used in. While they can be useful when utilized by a farmer with the knowledge of time, a lot will simply disregard these items as useless past certain points in the game. Normally far earlier than they should.

Horseradishes can be used in a few recipes. The most well-known is the Spring Seed recipe. Pull together the Horseradish as well as a Leek, Dandelion, and Daffodil in order to craft 10 plantable Seasonal Seeds. Horseradishes are also used in tailoring. They can be used as a brown dying additive, or you may place them with a piece of cloth in a sewing machine. That will create a Shirt labeled “Good Grief” Shirt, and is a mustard yellow top with brown accents.

Gifting and Requests

When giving Horseradish as a gift, the recipient must be chosen carefully. Krobus loves this gift, and Harvey, Leah, and Linus Like it. Everyone else in Pelican Town and beyond are either neutral to Horseradish or hates it. Haley, Jas, and Vincent fall into the latter category. Disdain will show when they are given one.

This foragable can be seen as a request from any villager on the board outside of Pierre’s General Shop. It is only requested in the Spring Season though. It is also part of one of the game’s base bundles - Spring Foraging Bundle. This is normally the first bundle in the Community Center’s Craft Room that players complete. They are also used in one cooking recipe which is the Shrimp Cocktail.

Seed Maker

Generating seeds is a useful thing in Stardew Valley, and with Seasonal Seeds like Spring Seeds not needing watering, they make a good crop for a lot of people. While you can just gather one of every foragable in the Spring category to make Spring Seeds, there is an easier way with Horseradishes. Don’t fret if you can’t always gather a Dandelion, Leek, and Daffodil on top of your Horseradish and craft them into a 10-pack of seeds. That’s a waste of 3 items. Just place Horseradish in the Seed Maker and wait for a bit. It will produce between 1 and 3 Spring Seeds for your farmer to plant.
