Ancient Coins are one of the three main types of currency that players can rack up inSea of Thieves. It is less common than Gold and Doubloons, but significantly more valuable, being the currency used for the Pirate Emporium, where players can purchase pets, ships, and other items. Ancient Coins can be acquired in bulk very easily if players are willing to spend real money, but there are cheaper more fun options.

There are two main ways to earn Ancient Coins in Sea of Thieves, aside from microtransactions. Players can either kill Ancient Skeletons, who will drop Ancient Coins, orthey can earn them through seasonal rewards with the Plunder Pass. These two things are easier said than done, however, and players should know what they’re getting themselves into before picking either method.

How To Get Ancient Coins In Sea Of Thieves

Killing Ancient Skeletons

This is likely the most popular method of farming Ancient Coins in Sea of Thieves, due to the large amounts of coins that Ancient Skeletons drop on death. Ancient Skeletons are identifiable by their large sacks of Ancient Coins on their back, as well as their blue and gold color. When killed, they will drop one of three tiers of rewards:

As one might expect, the higher-tiered drops are more uncommon. Ancient Skeleton spawns are random and can happen in any fort, sea fort, or island that has players. They will spawn individually, not as groups, and will disappear after just 20 seconds, so players need to act immediately upon seeing one. Ancient Skeletons have health comparable to standard Skeletons but have immunities to firebombs and environmental damage.

Sea of Thieves - unburied treasure

Ancient Skeletons spawn in place of the regular Emergent Skeleton waves that spawn, which will happen every 1-3 minutes or so on islands. This spawn rate may be higher if there are more players present. If players are experiencing a dwindling spawn rate of Emergent Skeletons, they can leave the island and exit out of its title card range, before returning to reset its spawn rate.

Ancient Skeleton spawns are completely random, and thus it won’t be a consistent grind. Players may get lucky and find a handful of these guys in an hour’s search, or they may find zero. Just try and gravitate towards areas of high skeletal concentration, and wait for the inevitable.

Earning Rewards

One of the many things that can be purchased from the Pirate Emporium is the Plunder Pass. This is a pass that allows players to earn Ancient Coins as rewards for accumulating Renown. The pass itself costs 999 Ancient Coins, meaning players will have to either defeat a handful of Ancient Skeletonsfirstor fork over $10 for a 1000 coin bundle. The purchase will set players back 999 Ancient Coins, but the rewards over time can easily make up for this. Additionally, players who purchase the Plunder Pass will have the ability to purchase premium and seasonal items earlier than others in the Pirate Emporium.

Each season, players will be able to level up through 100 levels of Renown, just through regular gameplay, as players earn Renown by fighting, finding treasure, or visiting islands. Players will earn their Ancient Coin rewards as they progress, and when the next season begins, players will have even more opportunities to earn as their Renown resets.

Microtransactions

While many people resent the idea of microtransactions, it’s certainly the most time-sensitive option for players just looking to purchase a specific item from the Pirate Emporium. If players want the Plunder Pass, but couldn’t be bothered with grinding random and rare Ancient Skeletons, then this is their only option. All of the following prices apply to both the Microsoft and Steam stores:
