Dragon Ball Superwas a controversial anime within theDragon Ballseries. Fans ofDragon Balldidn’t find some of the decisions made by Gohan in the series responsible or in tune with his heroic nature. Pan, the daughter of Gohan and Videl, gets sick and comes down with a fever. It seemed like a normal passing illness in the episode to any fan but Gohan used a wish from Shenron to cure his sickly daughter when no other medicine was working due to her one-fourth Saiyan heritage.

Fans found Gohan’s wish very silly and a waste of one when he could’ve easily gone to Bulma, a scientific genius he is friends with, or used a Senzu bean. However, one X user even said that Saiyans are inherently selfish beings, supporting the original claim that Gohan is selfish for not wishing all babies to be healthy. Is this true or is it simply a father’s worry?

Is Gohan Selfish or Was It Paternal Instincts Kicking In?

In the episode,Come Forth, Shenron! Whose Wish Will Be Granted?, ofDragon Ball Super, several characters come forth to have their wish granted. Some of them are rather ridiculous and not paid much mind to as they were more of “filler wishes” as compared to Goku’s and Gohan’s. Gohan’s wish came under some scrutiny, however, as the half-Saiyan wishes for his daughter’s health back, justified by the fact that none of the medicine on Earth was lowering her fever.

Fans have interpreted this wish as very selfish and self-serving. When babies have a fever, it’s usually nothing serious and a good rest will usually make it pass. However, Gohan just panics and uses his wish to cure Pan. This doesn’t exactly scream responsible for the Saiyan. Some X users call him selfish as a part of his Saiyan side while others understand his fatherly instinct and worries.

Saiyans are inherently selfish creatures

He’s not selfish, this was a sickness normal earth medicine had no cure for. And seeing as Pan is a quarter saiyan, she probably didn’t work with human medicine.

The original question also stems from Reddit where this discussion has taken place on several forums. Here’s what Redditors had to say.

While Saiyans are known to be rather brash and impulsive due to their warrior instincts, Gohan’s wish for Pan to be cured doesn’t seem to be a moment of selfishness. It’s a father’s way of caring for his daughter when all he wants is his world to be okay again. It does bring up a good point that Pan would’ve honestly been fine if she just had some rest but as a first-time parent, we can cut Gohan some slack.

Was Gohan’s Wish Irresponsible?

In short, yes. It is sort of irresponsible when a fever is nothing to worry about unless it goes on for too long. Pan is also one-fourth Saiyan and must’ve had a better chance to get better with rest. However, Gohan seems to use the wish as an easy fix instead of doing the hard work to take care of her. His judgement is impaired by a simple fever but Goku can’t even revive King Kai.

One Dragon Ball Character Single-handedly Ruined Gohan’s Life and It’s Not Goku or Chi-Chi

The fact that everyone agreed to let Gohan have his wish fulfilled is pretty strange as in real life, nobody would be that concerned about a fever. However, reviving someone from the dead would’ve been much more alarming and high on the priority list. Gohan’s wish wasn’t necessary.
