This week’sWWE Smackdownhad plenty of surprises with the ongoing feud between Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes taking a whole new direction. While the duo was supposed to fight for the WWE Universal Champion title at Wrestlemania XL, Rhodes decided to give that match against Reigns to legendary superstar Dwayne Johnson.
While Rhodes first chose Roman Reigns as his opponent at Wrestlemania XL, he was directed towards Seth Rollins to challenge him at the World Heavyweight Championship title. Cody Rhodes finally decided his choice this week and told Roman Reigns in the ring that he would also be coming for his title, but not at Wrestlemania. He then directed him towards his cousin Dwayne Johnson.

Rhodes and Reigns have had an ongoing feud for a while now and Rhodes had stated after winning this year’s Royal Rumble that he would be aiming for Reigns’ WWE Universal Champion title at Wrestlemania XL. However, he was reportedly challenged by his other opponent Seth Rollins to fight him for the Raw World Heavyweight Championship title.

As reported byWrestleview, Cody Rhodes finally came into the ring this week atWWE Smackdownand told Roman Reigns that he would be coming for The Tribal Chief’s title, but not at Wrestlemania. He also mentioned that he spoke to the council and one of them knew Reigns “very well” at which point The Rock’s entrance music kicked in to everyone’s surprise. Roman Reigns seemed to have the best reaction to his cousin’s entrance.

With Wrestlemania XL, Dwayne Johnson a.k.a The Rock would be having his first proper wrestling match since 2013. Johnson recently received a seat at the table when he joined the board of directors at TKO Group Holdings, the company that operates the WWE promotion. TheSmackdownwas his first appearance on the show since his appointment.

Wrestler Cody Rhodes was supposed to have his chance at WWE glory, trying to carry forward a legacy that his father, the legendary Dusty Rhodes had created. Rhodes tried to ‘finish his story’ at WrestleMania 39 but lost. However, the wrestler won this year’s Royal Rumble event and was going after Roman Reigns’ WWE Universal Champion title at Wrestlemania XL.
However, Rhodes seemed to have given his top booking at WrestleMania to Dwayne Johnson. Johnson made an appearance at the end of this week’sSmackdown, building up to fight against his cousin Roman Reigns in the ring. While The Rock’s return was received with fanfare, many fans reportedly felt that Rhodes was robbed of his chance at glory.

Horrible decision. What a cluster of a mess, Cody Rhodes not finishing his story, CM Punk wanting to main event WrestleMania but getting injured so obviously plans are for next year for CM Punk, Rock isn’t winning Champion, Cody will win at some other PPV. As soon as the WWE…
Many felt that The Rock’s ‘glory snatching’ entry was unfair towards Rhodes. Roman Reigns and Johnson had been feuding for some time and the star power both of them held would certainly bring more eyes to the match. However, WrestleMania was the biggest stage at the WWE promotion, and headlining the event against a superstar like Reigns was possibly Cody Rhodes’ greatest chance at glory.
Though Rhodes could still be a part of the event while going for the World Heavyweight Championship title against Seth Collins, a fight against Roman Reigns could have changed everything for the wrestler.
