It is difficult to imagineThe Officewithout Rainn Wilson’s Dwight Schrute, the annoying and sometimes endearing Assistant to the Regional Manager at Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch. Be it his romance with his colleague Angela, his rivalry with Jim Halpert, or even the way the character kisses up Steve Carell’s Michael Scott, it all started when Wilson showed up for the first audition on the very first day they were being held.

However, Wilson is not very keen on recounting his audition, which he gave to Micahel Scott and Dwight Schrute. The actor has been an integral part of many a sitcom and was auditioning forThe Officeafter a table read for another pilot was followed immediately by its cancelation.
Rainn Wilson did a Ricky Gervais impersonation for his audition as Micahel Scott
Ricky Gervais is one of the principal protagonists of the British version of The Office, where he serves as the equivalent of Michael Scott.
“I couldn’t even say the lines”: Steve Carell’s Worst Audition May Have Made its Way Into ‘The Office’ as One of His Best Scenes
Given that the US version of the show came after, Rainn Wilson might have thought emulating Gervais would have given him a leg up in his audition for Micahel Scott. However, judging from how it went, the actor is at least a little embarrassed by how it went, to the point where he does not want it to come out. He said:
[Jones] keeps threatening to release my Michael Scott audition. It is truly terrible because I just did a Ricky Gervais impersonation. I didn’t know what else to do, so I was kind of pulling on my tie a lot. But Dwight I knew. I was like, ‘This is completely in my wheelhouse. I know exactly who this person is. This guy is in my DNA. I have cousins who are really not that different from Dwight Schrute.’ And the rest is history.”

Rainn Wilson was very embarrassed by the audition he gave for Micahel Scott, but the actor nailed the character of Dwight Schrute. One of the best characters to come out of America’s sitcom canon, Dwight Schrute consistently ranks as one of the funniest characters in what can only be described as an American classic of a show, even if it’s a spin-off of the British original.
Rainn Wilson wishes that he took more from the set ofThe Office
Rainn Wilsonappeared onOffice Ladies, the podcast hosted by Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey. One of the most popular questions on the show is what the various actors took from the set. Rainn Wilson talked about how he wished that he actually took more, saying:
Oh, this breaks my heart. I should have taken so much more, I should have fleeced NBC Universal, I took Dwight’s glasses, I took his little desk plate that said Dwight Schrute on it. I took his stapler. And one or two other things I can’t quite remember, I have to look around and see, but I had a whole list of things I gave to Phil Shea [prop master], and I said, ‘Phil, pull these aside for me and I’ll get them from you later. And it was Dwight’s briefcase, and this, and that, and the other thing, and blah, blah, blah.’

The actor, as is often tradition when shows make it big, ended up taking a lot of the personal items of his character with him. Usually, there is an issue where production houses need to be reimbursed for things that actors end up taking, but smaller things usually go noticed until after the production is over and shut down, after which the actors usually go on record to interviews to talk about what they took.
