In the lead-up to the release of the Lady Gaga starrer, the hype for the movie was on another level. They weren’t wrong. After all, not many had seen a musical revolving around characters from DC Comic Books, let alone the fact that Joaquin Phoenix was all set to return as the Joker. ButJoker 2was a mere shadow of its predecessor.

Joker: Folie à Deuxwas a film to forget for Warner Bros.

DirectorTodd Philipswas aware of the fact that what he andJoaquin Phoenixset about creating was not a guarantee of success. When he revealed that the sequel to the Oscar-winning film would have been better off as a Broadway musical (an idea which couldn’t be entertained because of theHerstar’s hectic schedule), it was clear to every fan that we were about to see something unreal.

Once the movie hit theatres on 2nd October 2024, they were proved right – it was something that none could have anticipated. In sharp contrast to early responses, the movie bombed on both the commercial and critical front.

While a ‘Rotten’ Rotten Tomatoes rating of 32% goes a long way in showing what the critics felt about the movie, the Box Office numbers just add to it.

The movie just managed to rake in $38 million at the Domestic Box Office in the opening week, the second week was an even bigger disaster, as the movie earned a meager $7 million in its second week at the Box Office from 4,102 theatres in the US.

A damning stat reveals the gulf betweenJoker 2andJoker

After a two-month-long theatrical run, Joker 2 has grossed a meager $206.1 million globally. That is a figure that would leave many people at Warner Bros. Studio red-faced. As perVariety, it cost approximately $200 million to make the film and $100 million to market and distribute it.

If this statistic wasn’t damning enough, many have compared the failure of the sequel with the success of its predecessor.

Well deserved failure. One of the worst films of the year and easily one of the worst sequels of all-time.

Should have never been made.

😂 By far, this is the worse sequel in the history of sequels.Who can prove me wrong?

One wonders what went wrong with the franchise which had garnered so much appreciation from fans and critics alike. Whether it was the differences between Todd Phillips and DC Studios’ CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran, or the disregard for the core DC fandom, it is difficult to pinpoint the actual reason behind things turning out the way they did.
