There are a lot of numbers inPokemonGames. From levels to stats, EVs and IVs, with some being changed easily and with the methods pretty straightforward, while others are hidden until after you beat the game. EVs have been a long-standing game mechanic in the Pokemon franchise, with the system in place now dating back to Generation III.EV stands for Effort Value, and represents how strong your Pokemon has become under your care.

During regular gameplay, your Pokemon will gain EVs naturally when you use them in battle. Most often, your Pokemon will become well-rounded in the EV department, which is good for regular gameplay. However, if you are looking to play competitively inScarlet and Violet, or just destroy your friends in Link Battles, you might want to have a bit more control over where your Pokemon excel.

What Are EVs?
If you’ve ever wondered what those graphs with HP, Sp. Attack, Sp. Def. Defense and Speed mean, it basically represents your EV distribution for the given Pokemon. A sparkling stat means you have maxed it out. The total number of EVs a Pokemon can have is 510, with any stat having a max of 252. So, if you want to reach that number, you will only be able to do so for two stats. That’s actually not a bad idea and a common practice in the competitive scene. Depending on which Pokemon you are trying to EV train, the stat you need to focus on will vary.
Preparing For EV Training
The first thing you’ll want to do when going to EV train your Pokemon is giving them a blank slate from which to start.Pokemon who just hatched or are newly caught will have a total of 0 EVsto their name, which is considered ideal for this sort of training.
Of course, you also might want to EV train Pokemon you’ve been using already, in which case you’ll want to use berries to lower the current EVs before you get started on whatever method of EV training you choose.

There are 6 types ofberries— Pomeg, Kelpsy, Qualot, Hondew, Grepa, and Tamato — that eachcorrespond to a different stat. Feeding one to your Pokemon of choice willlower the effected stat by 10 Effort Pointsand also make them happier, which is a nice bonus.

EV Training Methods
Battling & Power Items
EveryPokemon you fight yields 1 to 3 Effort Pointsin a particular stat.4 Effort Points equals one Effort Value, or 1 extra stat point in a Pokemon who is level 100.The combined maximum total of Effort Point any one Pokemon can have is 510.
Raising EVs through fights can be pretty time-consuming, but there areitems you can buyat Delibird Gifts that will give you8 EV in their corresponding stat every time your Pokemon wearing it gains experience. This is great for Pokemon you’re still leveling up, especially if you have candy to burn and would rather use that.

Feather Collecting
In game, you may find feathers scattered throughout Padea. Some of the randomly spawning items you can find as golden sparkles on the ground are Health, Muscle, Resist, Genius, Clever, Swift, and Pretty Feathers. While the Pretty Feathers can be sold for 500 Poke Dollars, the other 6 give your Pokemon 1 Effort Point in the corresponding stat.
Saving Up For Vitamins
One of the best and fastest methods of EV training your Pokemon is byusing the vitamins you can buy at Chansey Supply. HP Up, Protein, Iron, Calcium, Zinc, and Carbos will each raise their corresponding stat by 10 Effort Points. If your Pokemon has 0 EVs, you’ll be able to give it 26 bottles of any vitamin, 26 bottles of a different vitamin, and 1 bottle of a third vitamin to max out their EVs entirely.
Which Is The Fastest Method Overall?
If you are looking for the fastest method to EV train your Pokemon, then you should be prepared for a grind. At this point, farming money and then using it to buy Vitamins is by far the best way to EV train a specific Pokemon. You canrefer to our guide here to learn more about how you may make money fastin the game. That being said, if you are EV training multiple Pokemon at once, then you should focus on using power items instead, as they are much more feasible.
