Days Goneis a first-party exclusive on the PlayStation 4 that was later ported to PC by Bend Studio, and while it may not have been a massive success like fellow PlayStation titles, it still earned a massive following and fans have demanded a sequel. Sony is still a business, and betting on winners is essential to remain ahead of the race.

Sony denied Bend Studio’s pitch for a Days Gone sequel and opted for a brand new IP with a live-service structure.

Despite the negative reviews and technical drawbacks at launch, fans still find plenty of things to marvel at in the world ofDays Gone. The horde feature was one of the main things that people have come to enjoy with its immersive and pulse-pounding nature of having to run for dear life while holding them off, and with the ending suggesting a potential and more open story for a sequel, both developers from Bend Studio and fans are disappointed with PlayStation’s final decree.

PlayStation Is In Favor Of A New IP Over A Days Gone Sequel

As part of PlayStation’s initiative to dip its toes in the live service style of gaming, several of their first-party studios including Naughty Dog, Insomniac Games, Bend Studio, and more are developing multiplayer titles that are either based on existing IP or brand new ones. After being denied aDays Gonesequel,Bend Studio began production on their newest project which was confirmed to be a live-service game.

PlayStation’s Lack of Exclusives in 2024 Could be a Blessing after 2023’s Dominance

Sony is in a bit of a weird place in terms of how they want to go about the gaming industry, their focus is now divided between developing traditional single-player games on their flagship console and later porting them to PC, and developing multiplayer games.

The success ofHelldivers 2from Arrowhead Game Studios was a great proof of concept that there is a large market for this structure, however, there are other titles from PlayStation Studios likeSpider-Man: The Great WebandThe Last of Usmultiplayer games that never saw the light of day.

Days Gone Deserved A Sequel, And Fans Are Devastated

Days Gonewas far from perfect, after receiving countless updates and patches it is now running at a stable and decent condition on both the PlayStation 4 and 5, and even better on PC. Bend Studio could have used this game as a lesson and impress PlayStation with an even better and hopefully smoother performance on a sequel.

Unfortunately, Sony has set eyes on a bigger and untapped market for live service games and requires all hands on deck leaving the dream forDays Gone 2left in the dust and cobwebs. Sony is well aware of the game’s potential despite not having the same level of success asGod of War,Uncharted,Horizon, and others which could mean that they may use the franchise and adapt it to other media to compensate for the lost sequel. Perhaps the success of a live-action adaptation ofDays Gonecan give them the push to return and complete Deacon’s story.

Fans may never see a follow-up to Days Gone despite having an open ended finale and a promising premise for a sequel due to PlayStation’s lack of faith.
