One of Netflix’s most popular series,Outer Banks, returns for its fourth season. As they have done with many of their popular series, Netflix is splitting the fourth season into two parts. Our favorite teenage treasure hunters are back for the first five episodes on October 10, with the second five coming on November 7. As someone who thought season 3 fell off the rails, part one of season 4 does up the ante, leading to a strong cliffhanger.

Outer Banks Season 4 Part 1 Review

Season 4 rewinds in the time leading up to the 18-month flash forward we saw at the end of last season, where Wes Genrette’s proposal for the Pogues to find Blackbeard’s treasure. Upon discovering the gold, we see the Pogues return to OBX and build a new safe heaven called Poguelandia 2.0. We follow the Pogues in their attempt to retain normality while heading on their latest mission.

As someone thoroughly invested in theFast and Furiousfranchise, I understand that where it started vs. where it is now is vastly different. Is there a level of absurdity to it? Maybe, but I love it. I began to peel back the layers and understand now thatOuter BanksisFast and Furiousfor teenagers. It all started with kids hunting a treasure, and now they are infamous treasure hunters. Sound familiar? There are plenty of wild and chaotic moments, but sit back and enjoy the ride.

The Pogues in Outer Banks Season 4

I mention the comparison because I believe that’s one of the biggest reasons why Season 4 stood out. The writers embraced the level of absurdity, which resulted in fun. Are these kids experts? No, but they understand the land and the surroundings, so you have some buy-in level. Blurring the lines of reality and fiction allows flexibility in your execution and storytelling.

The Pogues are a cast of misfits that protect one another no matter how much they get on one another’s nerves (sound familiar?). This cast has incredible chemistry, and all have a level of likability. To me, Rudy Pankow stood out massively for this first patch. JJ is a loose cannon who always manages to dumb things and piss everyone off. Pankow’s portrayal of JJ reminds me a lot of Paul Walker’s Brian O’Connor. A cocky, arrogant, good-looking rebel who does uncharacteristic things to get the job done. Of course, the rest of the Pogues are fantastic making for a great ensemble.

When you have ten-episode seasons, it’s hard to understand the splitting of the series into two parts. While I don’t love it, I don’t think Netflix is going to get away from it anytime soon. That said, the writers ofOuter Banksdid a great job with the pacing of Part 1. The stakes were set early (basically started last season), and they developed it perfectly, setting up for what promises to be an explosive Part 2.

Is Outer Banks Season 4 Part 1 Worth Watching?

If you’ve watched the first three seasons ofOuter Banks, you are already invested and might as well finish the ride. As I mentioned, the significant shift in embracing the absurdity of the series is why Part 1 of this season felt like it was back on track. The Pogues have become a family, resulting in your typical bickering amongst each other, but when it’s time for the next mission, you sit back and enjoy the ride. With the stakes in play and the twists with JJ’s character in play, I am excited to see what they deliver in Part 2 coming November 7.
