The Straw Hat Pirates ofOne Pieceis an almost complete crew, with their most recent member, Jinbe, taking the charge of helmsman. While the captain and protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy, is always roaring to add new members, the current formation is more than satisfying.

So why areOne Piecefans not able to move on from the numerous potential crew members? The times when Luffy tried to recruit crew members were back when he didn’t have a lot of them. Now, the Straw Hats have come to a point where they even have a Grand Fleet on their side.

From Yamato to even Kizaru, there’s no end to theories about who might join the crew. One character who stands out amongst all of them, however, is Bon Clay.

Bon Clay was introduced back in the Alabasta Saga and was initially a villain. However, this all changed when he and Luffy realized how similar they were. He sacrificed himself twice for Luffy and the Straw Hats, stealing the hearts of fans and making us wish he joined. However, is it a bad thing that he didn’t?

Bon Clay’s arc inOne Pieceis perfect

From antagonist-to-ally, Bon Clay is amongst the top characters inOne Piecewho have been written into this trope. He was never malicious towards the Straw Hats, he was just doing his job. His actions in the Impel Down Arc especially proved his friendship was real, even risking imprisonment again.

Due to his ultimate sacrifice in the Impel Down Arc and the confirmation of his survival, fans wish he would join the Straw Hat Pirates more than anyone.Luffy once invited a zombified unicornso an old friend wouldn’t be out of the question. However, is it necessary for every friend to join the crew?

One Piecefans took to Reddit to debate this, while the original post did express their disappointment that Bon Clay isn’t likely to join the crew now that it’s quite full.

Bon Clay’s story had its closure. He’s a character who got his redemption arc once andEiichiro Odadidn’t even need to bring him back in Impel Down, despite how happy we were to have him. However, not every ally of Luffy needs to consistently be part of the story on paper or screen.

Where is Bon Clay now?

After he impersonated Magellan and got the gates open, Bon Clay had to face the wrath of the vice warden. At the time, his fate wasn’t clear and his last words to Luffy weren’t looking great until Oda confirmed his survival.

The 46th volume of the Cover Story,From the Decks of the World, confirms that Bon Clay is the new queen of the Newkama Land since Ivankov’s escape. It’s included in chapter 666 with the cover page titled,Impel Down Level 5.5 Newkama Land, New Queen Bon-sama.

While some fans aren’t satisfied with such little content of Bon Clay, knowing he survived is good enough for most. He also admired Ivankov and loved Newkama Land so stepping in his shoes after his escape rounds up his story well and in character.

There’s absolutely no doubt in mind that Bon Clay’s story is well-written,especially for an LGBTQ+ character in those times. While we always hope he comes back, his story got the closure it deserved.
