Filmmaker Robert Eggers is back to homeground with the horror filmNosferatu, which was released on Christmas Day. The remake of the 1922 silent film has received rave reviews for its aesthetic and horror treatment. This was the second large-scale feature for Eggers, who previously directed the folk revenge dramaThe Northman.

Eggers has always maintained that his style of filmmaking is best suited for the indie circuit. He has been one of the frontrunners in modern horror with films likeThe WitchandThe Lighthouse. While he hinted that making a Marvel film would be out of the question for him, he did say he liked watching Matt Reeves’The Batmanand learned a lot from it.

Nosferatu’s Robert Eggers praisedThe Batmanand said he learned from it

Robert Eggers’Nosferaturemake was a brave attempt for a filmmaker to tackle so early in his career. Though only four films old (includingNosferatu), the filmmaker took on the task of remaking a classic in the horror genre. He seems to have succeeded as most reviews have been positive, with hisdirection and atmosphere-building being praised.

Does Nosferatu Have a Post-Credits Scene?

Eggers began his career with the folk horror filmThe Witch. The A24 film was written in Early Modern English and starred Anya Taylor-Joy in the lead role. The film’s success led to him working with Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe for the filmThe Lighthouse. He then did his first attempt at a large-scale studio film withThe Northman.

While Eggers has been a comic book fan, he mentioned in an interview that he found his calling in historical art. However, as a friend of Pattinson, he reportedly watched Matt Reeves’The Batmanand admitted that he learned a lot from the film. He said toThe Guardian,

Does Nosferatu Have a Post-Credits Scene?

I saw it really just because Rob [Pattinson] is my friend. But I liked it, and I learned a lot of stuff from it, frankly. I applaud Matt Reeves for keeping an identity and making a film like that. I can’t imagine. I guess I just made a big movie, but it’s not the same.

His first attempt at the studio filmThe Northman, however, was not a huge hit but reportedly broke even through home video sales (viaTHR).

Robert Eggers reportedly does not feel he is suited for Marvel films

Robert Eggers has a unique vision and style that has made him one of the few modern-day auteurs to look out for. Though he has mostly stuck to one genre (three out of four films have been horror), he puts in his vision even when he is dabbling in another genre likeThe Northman. This kind of auteuric brilliance may not be what blockbuster studio films are looking for.

Eggers also seems to be aware of this. He mentioned that though he has had the ‘big studio meeting’, he did not feel suited for a superhero or a large-scale blockbuster franchise like the MCU. He said,

I’ve definitely had, like, not Marvel, but the big studio meeting. But I also don’t know what I have to offer. Everything that I’m particularly good at, or that makes me unique, is not helpful in making a Marvel movie.

The MCU has rarely worked with auteurs before, withEternals’ Chloé Zhao probably being the last filmmaker who had worked in the indie circuit before her breakthrough withNomadland, which won her the Oscar for Best Director.
