While she generally lets her work speak for herself, Baum did not hold herself back last week. As reported by theDaily Mail, she spoke to Janet Maslin, a film critic for the New York Times, during a discussion panel in Pleasantville. She directed some disparaging comments atSydney Sweeney, who has become Hollywood’s newest sweetheart.
“There’s an actress who everybody loves now: Sydney Sweeney. I don’t get Sydney Sweeney. I was watching on the plane Sydney Sweeney’s movie [‘Anyone but You’] because I wanted to watch it. I wanted to know who she is and why everybody’s talking about her. I watched this unwatchable movie — sorry to people who love this … romantic comedy where they hate each other,”she said.
The producer also teaches at the University of Southern California. She went on to reveal that she spoke about it during her class as well.

Baum’s comments raised a lot of eyebrows since she directly targeted a young actress who has just begun to find her footing in the industry. According toTMZ, however, the Hollywood executive has already expressed regrets over her original statements.

Sweeney is enjoying the upswing that her career is currently on,withImmaculateperforming well. However, she came under fire from Baum without provocation. As reported byVariety, the actress issued a statement in response to Baum’s comments.
“How sad that a woman in the position to share her expertise and experience chooses instead to attack another woman. If that’s what she’s learned in her decades in the industry and feels is appropriate to teach to her students, that’s shameful. To unjustly disparage a fellow female producer speaks volumes about Ms. Baum’s character,”read the statement.
